All Disease Begins in the Gut - Hippocrates

This year is my 22nd year in practice and in the words of Jerry Garcia…what a long strange trip its been.  As my knowledge has grown over the years, the types of patients that seek my care have changed.  With allopathic medicine continuing to focus on suppressing symptoms and handing out toxic chemicals with horrible side effects many people sought my help to find the causative factors of their conditions.  The people that have put their trust in me over the years to help them find solutions to their health problems humble me.

Today, approximately 90% of my patients suffer from either a primary digestive issues such as gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, leaky gut, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, candida infection, bacterial overgrowth, and acid reflux, or a secondary digestive issue which I’ll explain in the next paragraph.  The number one reason patients visit their doctor is for digestive complaints.  In addition to these patients I also started seeing more patients suffering from autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and hashimoto’s disease.  Many of these patients had horrible digestive symptoms in addition to their autoimmune diagnosis.  Looking for ways to positively influence their dysfunctional immune systems, I learned that upwards of 80% of the immune system resides in the digestive tract.  If I was going to be able to help these patients in any way I needed to find a way to help their digestion. I also saw first hand that patients with acne, eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis often had poor digestion as the source of their symptoms.  Then there were patients who presented with headaches, fatigue, and hormone imbalances and after a complete review of their condition I realized that, in some cases, their digestion was the source of their discomfort. These are examples of what I call secondary digestive issues…the main complaint is not a digestive issue but as soon as you start to dig around for the cause of their symptoms digestion quickly moves to the top of the list.  At some point I realized if I didn’t have an answer to effectively support digestion then maybe a career change was in order.

My search led me to probiotics.
On paper probiotics seemed to be my answer.  I went to the best conferences and listened to the brightest minds.  They taught me that reseeding the bowel with good bacteria was the solution I was looking for.  Supplementing my patients with billions of lactobacillus and bifidobacteria would correct the imbalance in the intestinal tract and solve all my patients primary and secondary digestive issues.  I jumped in with both feet.

It turned out to be a little bit different in practice than what all those smart guys said.
I would say overall my experience with probiotics was very much a mixed bag.  While I had some success using probiotics, it wasn’t uncommon for a supplement to work for a week or two, and then lose efficacy.  Even in patients who reported improvement if they missed a dose or tried to lower the dose the symptoms came right back.  So the results I saw were transient.  We weren’t making any lasting change we were just treating a symptom.  I saw infections that wouldn’t get better, no matter how many probiotics we threw at them. My frustration grew with every ineffective probiotic strain I tried.

New probiotic formulations came out every day, but none of them worked consistently.
Because of my experience formulating supplements, I had real questions and concerns about the quality and consistency of the probiotic supplements that were on the market. Some had one strain, while others had 15, but regardless, nothing gave me the results I was looking for.  Then the market shifted to “more is better”.  It seemed like overnight we went from recommending 5 billion to 20 billion to 50 billion to 100 billion.  I bought in that more must be better but clinically I just didn’t see the changes in patients.

I questioned how these bacteria would make it to the intestines alive.
In school I learned that the stomach is an incredible barrier to entry.  It doesn’t just let any bacteria pass into our intestines.  If it did then we would always be sick and most people would die from some type of infection.  I also learned that the bacteria that inhabit our intestines are anaerobic, which means they die if they touch oxygen.  If the probiotic company is telling me the bacteria is alive when it is in my hand before I swallow it then it can’t be anaerobic.  So even if these bacteria could magically get past the stomach acid how could it live in an oxygen free environment in the gut.  Plus, where did caveman get his probiotics?  He didn’t have a refrigerated section at Whole Foods to shop from.  Nowhere could he access these bacteria in his environment.  It didn’t make sense.  As more research came out it became clear that this reseeding theory was just not supported by science.

Then something interesting crossed my desk…
A few years ago an article on Bacillus spores was passed to me from a colleague. I was immediately fascinated. Bacillus spores provided an answer to all of my concerns.  First, they are safe. Bacillus spores were the first prescription probiotics in the 1950’s.

Bacillus spores easily survived the stomach.
Because Bacillus probiotics develop a hard shell (an endospore), they are highly resistant to UV and gamma radiation, high and low temperatures, and acidic conditions found in the stomach. Gut model studies proved they survived the acidic stomach to populate in the intestines.

Bacillus spores are a great value.
With Bacillus spores, I got great, consistent results with a wide variety of gastrointestinal issues. As I started to investigate more, I realized that these results came from the unique properties of Bacillus. These spores crowd out harmful bacteria in the gut, produce enzymes to help with food digestion, and fight bloating and cramping. They also produce RDA-equivalent quantities of B-vitamins, vitamin K2, and offer a significant source of carotenoids, important antioxidants that can reduce free radical production in the body.

MegaSporeBiotic was created to provide consistent, reliable effects.
MegaSporeBiotic, is the first pharmaceutical grade, 100% spore form probiotic and carotenoid antioxidant combination formula.  The results we have seen with primary and secondary digestive issues have been remarkable.  Additionally clinical research using Megaspore has given us better insights on how these strains bring us their health benefits.  In June we will be finishing the first ever-human leaky gut study.  Pilot study findings were quite remarkable.

We’re Soaking in the Vitamin D, What About You?

Spring is upon us. And, with spring, comes Spring Break for many of us. If you are heading out to a sunny destination, be sure to soak up the sun responsibly with lots of sunscreen and water. For those that are not headed to a sunny locale, where you will be getting a good dose of sunshine (approximately 10 minutes with your head, arms and legs uncovered), you should consider a vitamin D3 supplement.

Sun exposure helps our bodies to produce vitamin D, a critical nutrient that is essential for health and vitality. If we don’t get enough sun, or don’t supplement adequately, we risk developing a vitamin D deficiency.

Shockingly, one out of every 2 people in the world are deficient in vitamin D, and deficiency in this nutrient is considered a substantial risk factor for developing chronic disease or death. Thankfully, vitamin D supplements reduce your risk of disease and death and are very easy to take.

My preference is for  PureBalance Micellized Vitamin D3, a highly absorbable liquid form that both children and adults find easy to take.  I usually order labs to see what someone’s level of vitamin D is before recommending a dosage, but for most people 3,000 IU/day is a good amount.

One of the benefits to having a normal vitamin D level is that D works with your body to increase the absorption of calcium. If you also take calcium supplements along with your vitamin D, you definitely should consider adding vitamin K2 to your routine.  Vitamin K2 helps calcium get added to your bones and not your arteries and soft tissues.

Wherever your travels may take you, take a minute to consider adding vitamin D to your regular routine. Your body will thank you! Happy Spring and safe travels!

Tom

Fight your Allergies Naturally

If you’re one of the 50 million Americans who suffer from allergies, you know how annoying and disrupting they can be. From a simple case of the sniffles to dry mouth, fatigue, and even trouble breathing, seasonal allergies can really cut in to your enjoyment of spring.Thankfully, there are some really simple things that you can do to combat allergies before they start.

Make sure to drink plenty of water.

Water is critical to helping your body detox as well as thinning the mucus in your sinus cavities. Everyone’s needs for water are different. A simple way I use with my patients is to take their weight, divide it in two, and suggest that they drink that many ounces of water each day. For example, if someone weighs 140 pounds, they should drink at least 70 ounces (equivalent to nearly 9 cups) of filtered water daily.

Try saline nasal irrigation.

A 2012 systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 studies on saline nasal irrigation showed a beneficial effect on nasal symptoms, a reduction in medication use, and an increase in the quality of life. I like to include oregano in my nasal rinse as well as saline (check out our SinuClenz product), because this appears to do a better job of decreasing inflammation and reducing symptoms. If you do use nasal irrigation, make sure you regularly clean your rinsing device. I would also suggest using filtered water rather than tap water.

Get plenty of vitamin C.

Vitamin C is one of those essential nutrients that can’t be synthesized by humans and therefore needs to be present in the diet. Vitamin C is an important immune system supporter and a potent antioxidant as well as having the ability to deactivate histamine.
Great food sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, berries, watermelon, mango, and peppers.

Take your probiotics.

You may not immediately think of probiotics as a first line defense against environmental allergies, but I do! Beneficial bacteria like those found in Megasporebiotic help to calm down the immune response which is at the heart of your symptoms. Although the normal dose of Megasporebiotic is 2 capsules per day, I will often encourage patients to increase their dose temporarily during periods of stress, illness, travel, or the onset of seasonal allergies! Try 3-4 capsules per day during the first few weeks of spring allergy season, and then decrease back to the normal dose.
If you have had trouble with seasonal allergies in the past, now is absolutely the time to start preventative measures. Make sure to get plenty of rest, reduce stress, and make an appointment with myself or Ingrid to get recommendations that are tailored to you.

Tom

Are you suffering from Inflammation?

5 Inflammation-Causing Foods and 1 Easy Fix

The subject of Inflammation has been in the news quite a lot lately, and for good reason. Inflammation plays a role in most of the chronic diseases we see today, including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and even acne!

Temporary inflammation is good—our bodies depend on inflammatory processes to heal injuries and fight off infection. But when acute inflammation turns chronic, the immune system starts attacking normal cells and the normal healing process turns harmful.

One great way to reduce inflammation is to reduce or remove the following 5 inflammation producing foods from your diet. But sometimes that isn’t enough. Read to the end to discover my go-to solution for inflammation!

  1. Sugar

Sugar is at the top of my list for inflammatory foods, and it’s one of the most prevalent in our diets. The average American consumes 32 teaspoons of added sugars daily! This increased sugar consumption releases inflammatory messengers called cytokines which can wreak havoc in your body. To avoid sugars, eat whole, non-processed foods. When you do eat processed foods, read the labels to avoid any word ending in “ose” such as fructose or sucrose.

  1. Trans Fats

Trans fats are known to trigger systemic inflammation, and even small quantities can be problematic. Most trans fats are found in fast foods, processed snack foods, cookies, doughnuts, and most stick margarines. Check food labels for the presence of trans fats, but be aware that food products with less than 0.5 grams per serving do not need to list trans fat on the food label. Instead check the ingredient list for partially hydrogenated oils—these are a sure sign that trans fats are present.

  1. Oils with Omega-6 Fatty Acids

Though our bodies need omega 6 fatty acids for normal growth and development, we often don’t get a good balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Eat too many foods containing omega-6 fatty acids and the body starts to produce pro-inflammatory chemicals. Avoid cooking with oils such as corn, safflower, sunflower, soy, peanut, and vegetable. You may also find these oils in mayonnaise and salad dressings.

  1. Refined Carbohydrates

Foods made with white flour, white rice, and white potatoes, as well as many other cereal grains have high levels of refined carbohydrates. Processed carbohydrates send your blood sugar into the stratosphere, and also create advanced glycation end (AGE) products that boost inflammation. Picture a candied apple: the sugar that forms around the apple hardens in the same way that advanced glycation products harden around nerves and arterioles, restricting blood supply and creating dysfunction.

  1. Gluten and casein

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley whereas casein is found in dairy products. Both substances can promote inflammation and should be avoided, especially by people who are prone to inflammation.

While you should work to remove these inflammatory foods from your diet, no one eats perfectly 100% of the time. Even if your diet is perfect, often stressors and environmental toxins can lead to inflammation.

1 Easy Fix

One of the products I love to use with people who suffer from inflammation is Omax3 Professional Strength, a professional strength omega-3 supplement. The omega-3 oils in this supplement were developed by Yale University-affiliated physicians, and contain a balanced 4:1 ratio of EPA to DHA (two omega-3 fatty acids) which research shows is the best ratio to reduce inflammation.

Clinical research shows that the omega-3 in Omax3 Professional Strength reduces joint discomfort and increases mobility, improves mood health, and enhances cognitive function. This supplement has also been shown to significantly improve cardiovascular risk factors. In one 3-month study, patients experienced a 31% reduction in triglycerides, a 13% reduction in total cholesterol, an 11% reduction in LDL, and a 9.8% improvement in cholesterol/HDL ratio.

The main reason that I recommend Omax3 Professional Strength over other omega-3 supplements is its purity. If you want to test your omega-3 supplement for purity, place it in the freezer for 24 hours. While Omax3 Professional Strength stays clear, other omega-3 supplements cloud over with impurities such as saturated fats, omega-6 fats, and toxins like mercury, lead, and PCBs.

Along with removing inflammation-causing foods from your diet, the omega-3 fatty acids in Omax3 Professional Strength will help reduce inflammation in your body and reduce your risk of chronic disease!

Celebrate Hearth Health!

6 Things You Can Do For Your Heart Today

Most of us take active steps to avoid cancer—we try to eat right, watch our sun exposure, and have regular check-ups with our physicians. But what have you done lately for the #1 killer of both men and women in America—heart disease? Sure, you don’t smoke, don’t drink alcohol excessively, watch your diet and exercise, but are you really doing what counts? Check out these small, evidence-based tricks and tips to benefit your heart starting today.

1. Invest in Supportive Relationships

We all know that having loving, supportive relationships feels great, but did you know it directly affects heart health? In one recent study, people with high levels of supportive relationships were significantly less likely to increase their body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference. People with high negative relationships had a 10+ percent increase in waist circumference, as well as increased BMI. Higher BMI readings and waist circumference are significant risk factors for heart disease, so it appears that investing in good relationships with loved ones not only feels great but benefits your heart.

2. Eat Healthy Fats

For years, fats have gotten a bad rap, but in the last 5-10 years, there is increasing evidence that our fear of fats was unfounded, especially healthy fats. Fats are essential for whole body health, and are especially critical to your heart and brain.

Try to include sources of healthy fat in your diet, such as coconut oil, avocado, olive oil, ghee, nuts and seeds, butter sourced from grass-fed cows, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids.

Fish, particularly fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, lake trout, sardines, or herring have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a substance which benefits the heart greatly. Omega-3’s reduce the risk of abnormal heart beats, reduce triglyceride levels, slow the growth of plaque in the blood vessels, and lower blood pressure. I generally recommend 2-3 servings (approximately ¾ cup flaked fish) per week to get the optimum benefits.

Of course, some kinds of fish contain high levels of mercury, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and other toxic chemicals. Try to stay away from larger fish such as shark, king mackerel, or swordfish, as they have had longer to accumulate these substances.
Watch for our next newsletter which will contain an in-depth analysis of omega-3 supplements.

3. Boost Your Exercise Routine with Interval Training

Interval training pairs short bursts of vigorous activity with brief periods of rest, and has been shown to increase oxygenation, reduce cardiovascular risk factors, and reduce blood sugar levels. Interval training also improves endothelial function, which is closely linked to cardiovascular health (the endothelium is the inner lining of blood vessels).

If you don’t exercise already, start slowly with a 20-minute walk around the block 3-5 days/week. As your endurance improves, add 1-2 minute bursts of faster, more vigorous walking followed by 30 seconds of slower walking. Alternate between the bursts of activity (A) with rest periods of slower walking (B) so your workout has an ABAB pattern.

If you already have an exercise plan in place, add more formal interval training to your workout. I like this video designed for beginners, but if you want something more vigorous, search online for “interval training for cardiovascular fitness.”

4. Rethink Your Stress

I’m sure you’re heard a lot of evidence that chronic stress can damage your heart—and you’re not alone in that belief. More than 80 percent of American adults think that stress can have a strong or very strong impact on health, and 94 percent believe that stress contributes to the development of illnesses like heart disease, obesity, and depression.

And while there is plentiful evidence to support the chronic stress/disease connection, what if focusing on the negative impact of stress makes it worse?

Research published in the European Heart Journal found that those who believed stress heavily affected their health had a 50 percent greater risk of dying from heart attack! Remember, this study was not looking at the presence or absence of stress in participants lives, rather it was linked how people thought about stress to their cardiovascular outcomes.

One way to change your mindset is to watch the work of Alia Crum, in particular her Ted Talk on stress mindsets. I also recommend reading Stanford Psychologist Kelly McGonigal’s book The Upside of Stress. This book will help you see how stress can make you “stronger, smarter, and happier” if you can change your mindset and embrace it.

5. Consider Vitamin K2

Vitamin K2 is likely the most important nutrient you’ve never heard of. While you may be familiar with vitamin K1, the nutrient that helps our blood clot, K2 is greatly unfamiliar to most people. Research has shown K2 to be important for many diseases, including osteoporosis, diabetes, and even cancer. But I find the most promise in using K2 for heart health.

At one point, researchers thought that osteoporosis and calcification of the blood vessels to be unrelated conditions, but there is increasing evidence that a deficiency of vitamin K2 may be at the heart of both!

Without K2, your body can’t activate Matrix Gla Protein (MGP), a substance that inhibits tissue calcification. In other words, without K2, your body sends calcium to your blood vessels, rather than to your bones where it belongs.

There are a number of different forms of vitamin K2, the one that is best absorbed and most stable is K2-7 (also known as MK-7 or menaquinone-7). Typical doses range from 45 mcg to 320 mcg/day, and the most compelling research on K2 and heart health show significant benefit in a higher dose. Most of the vitamin K2 supplements use a K2 source that degrades quickly in the capsule, unfortunately resulting in much lower levels of K2 than claimed on the labels. In our research, only supplements with K2 sourced from MenaquinGold were found to have as much K2 present in the supplement as was promised on the label.

6. Get Tested

The blood work most commonly prescribed at your yearly physical (CBC, CMP, and lipid panel) is far from complete where your heart health is concerned. I encourage all of my patients to have a yearly enhanced cardio metabolic panel, which includes an expanded lipid panel that measures the density and number of lipoproteins, vascular inflammation markers including CRP and homocysteine, and metabolic risk factors such as insulin, hA1c, adiponectin, and c-peptides.

In the office, we offer a complete CardioMetabolic panel from SpectraCell Labs because it is the most comprehensive assessment cardiovascular health we have ever seen. To read more about our favorite test for heart health, click here. In honor of Heart Health Month, SpectraCell Labs is offering a February-only price of $10 for the CardioMetabolic panel when combined with the Micronutrient Panel (a combined price of $190).

It’s never too late to help your heart. Small, incremental changes can make a huge impact on your heart disease risk, as well as on your overall health.

Forget What You Know About Probiotics and Gut Health!

As I alerted you earlier this week, I’m writing to share some exciting information and clinical results about a product that I discovered and have been researching for the past two years. More importantly, this discovery has already yielded amazing results! Let me begin by telling you a couple of stories:

J.S. is a 53 year-old female with a history of transient irritable bowel attacks. The episodes usually lasted between two and three weeks, with the symptoms gradually subsiding over time. When J.S. came to see me, she had been experiencing acute abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea for three days. She was given Megaspore Biotic. Within two hours of the first dose, she said the symptoms subsided about 85-percent. Within 24-hours, the symptoms were completely resolved.

T.S is a 43 year-old man with a history of ulcerative colitis. The symptoms were acute, including extreme pain and disabling spasms throughout his intestinal tract, as well as bloody diarrhea. T.S. was prescribed Megaspore Biotic along with aloe vera juice. Within the first week, the stools returned to normal consistency and the bleeding stopped. He said the cramping symptoms decreased 50-percent. T.S. noticed an increase in cramping whenever he ate dairy products, and decided to stop eating them. With the removal of dairy foods and the continued supplementation of Megaspore Biotic, the symptoms T.S. was experiencing were completely resolved over a period of four weeks.

M.M. is a 17-month-old girl with chronic diaper rash. Her mother reported that the toddler’s first episode of diaper rash began six days after birth in reaction to antibiotic treatments. The child had not been free of a rash for more than two weeks her entire life, and also experienced severe bouts of diarrhea. M.M. was prescribed Megaspore Biotic. Within 10 days, the toddler’s rash was gone and her bowel movements were normal. We are happy to report that M.M. has now remained rash-free for five weeks. In addition, her mother reported that M.M. is gaining weight, sleeping better, and is generally happier than she has ever been.

Megaspore Biotic IS making a difference

Natural Medicine is my passion and I love witnessing the transformation of my patients’ health. The changes I’ve observed in the short period of time since the introduction of this new product have helped reaffirm my belief that the majority of chronic diseases begin in the digestive system.

Since opening my practice close to 20 years ago, the number one concern of the majority of my patients has been digestive issues. Many of them came to me with little hope after traditional medical protocols didn’t work. Consequently, I’ve focused or obsessed about digestive health for quite some time. To help my patients, I’ve recommended or created a number of products that have yielded mixed results. However, I finally know I have found the nutritional supplement that is qualitatively making a difference: Megaspore Biotic!

If you are receiving this email, chances are our paths crossed in some way. You or a member of your family are a patient of my Natural Medicine practice; you may be a professional colleague, or you may have elected to follow my newsletter after searching for alternative medical information and discovering the Pure Balance Health Center website online. Whatever the reason, I am grateful to have the opportunity to share with you the research and the data which demonstrates why the discovery of Megaspore Biotic has far reaching implications for both health and disease management.

If you or someone you know suffers from any form of digestive discomfort, food sensitivities, IBS, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, obesity, joint pain, or even asthma, then I implore you to read all of this information because it will dramatically impact your life. If you or someone you know has an immune system condition, such as eczema, allergies, auto-immune condition, or any imbalance or disease associated with a weakened immune system, this information is essential.

The most in-depth research ever conducted on probiotics

Before I tell you more about Megaspore Biotic, I have to share the research, which will provide the context for your understanding why this is a major breakthrough.

Five years ago, the National Institute of Health (NIH) began the Human Microbiome Project (HMP). Two hundred scientists from 83 of the world’s top universities contributed their expertise to research and better understand the bacteria living in and on our bodies, and the role it plays in health and disease. The findings, which were first published in 2012, were astonishing. Here is what we NOW know:

  • We are more bacteria than human – 10 trillion human cells vs. 100 trillion bacteria cells.
  • There are more than 1,000 different species of microorganisms in each individual’s digestive tract out of nearly 35,000 possible species.
  • Bacterial genes outnumber human genes 150-to-1 (25,000 human genes vs. 3.3 million microbial genes).
  • No two individuals have the exact same composition – not even twins.
  • Disease is associated with a disruption of the ecology of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract (Crohn’s disease, IBS, asthma and even obesity)

In an effort to understand the role of supplemental probiotics (beneficial bacteria that can enter and inhabit the gut) in health and disease, the researchers recognized the need to define the function of the probiotic. These criteria are the result of millions of dollars of research; the most in-depth probiotic research ever conducted:

  • In order to act as a probiotic, the bacteria must be a species that normally occurs in the individual’s digestive tract. It must have a position in the microbiota or it won’t be able to settle and colonize.
  • Probiotics offer benefits through their stimulatory effects on the immune system in the gut and by reaching a critical mass to produce beneficial compounds. To be of benefit, it must have higher numbers than what naturally exists in the gut to colonize and cause stimulation.
  • Supplemented probiotics, by evolution, should naturally occur in the environment (where they gain exposure to the host) and be stable both in the environment and the GI tract.

Results that can’t be denied

You may be surprised to learn that based on these criteria, every commercially available probiotic currently sold in drugstores, physicians’ offices, and local health food stores don’t fit the bill. Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp. are the dominant probiotic strains in commercially available probiotic supplements and commonly added to foods. While it’s true that these bacteria do occur naturally in the intestinal tract, there are a few additional facts that the research brought to light.

The populations of Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp. are first introduced to our systems via our mothers – through natural (vaginal) childbirth and breast-feeding. They are GI tract anaerobes, meaning they can’t sustain themselves in an oxygen-rich environment outside of the GI tract.

Secondly, these are some of the most predominant organisms in our digestive system with upwards of 20 trillion of these bugs in an average intestinal tract. In order for probiotics to have an immune-stimulating effect they need to be supplemented in concentrations higher than what naturally exists. The best of these commercially available products claim upwards of 100 billion organisms per dose, which isn’t even close to the 20 trillion already there. Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp., even at dosages of 100 billion, simply can’t offer healthy immune-stimulation from dose-to-dose. It’s like adding a single drop of dye to a swimming pool and hoping to change the color of the water in the entire pool.

During studies of the oral administration of Lactobacillus sp., HMP researchers found that there was absolutely no impact on the concentrations of these organisms in the GI tract. They concluded that close to 100 percent of the lactobacilli were destroyed by the stomach acid before they could even reach the lower GI tract.

The bottom line: Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp. cannot survive the harsh conditions of the stomach when supplemented orally and their numbers are influenced most by the birth process and the first year of life. After that, the numbers stay pretty constant throughout our lives. Consequently, Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp should not be classified as probiotics but rather be classified as normally occurring organisms that inhabit our gut (gut commensal organisms).

HMP turns Probiotic Industry Upside Down

It is very important to say at this time that Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp products have been somewhat beneficial. I have used them for years and my own experience has taught me that some patients benefited from the supplementation of these organisms. I believe that future research will show that these organisms, even when they are dead, will positively impact the pH of the intestinal tract, which can be very beneficial to someone with digestive symptoms.

At the same time, this information also explains the limited benefits experienced after oral supplementation of Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp, and why they don’t last long after supplementation stops. The transient effect associated with pH changes requires daily dosing with no long-term benefits once supplementation ceases, and the benefits offer relief for a very small number of conditions. Whatever the reason may be, the facts are the facts. Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp supplements are not capable of consistently modulating immune function in the gut, and immune modulation is a key quality for a true probiotic organism. Remember: Nearly 80 percent of our immune function is in the GI tract. True probiotics play a major role in its form and function. Thus, if a probiotic can’t effectively enter, colonize and create the immune stimulation, by definition, it’s not a probiotic!

Based on the results of the Human Microbiome Project’s research of bacteria, the crashing noise that you now hear is the probiotic industry turned upside down. Thankfully, the research also found the real answer.

Introducing Spore Bacteria

The answer is Spores! Spore-form bacteria are robust organisms that can survive the harsh environment of the stomach 100 percent intact. Through the evolutionary process, nature designed them to be transferred from human-to-human via the environment and food. They have evolved to be very stable in the environment and also to colonize the GI tract very effectively. In fact, studies have shown that certain developments of the human immune system specifically require spores.

What do we know about spores?

  • They are found all over the environment (soil, vegetation, dust, rocks, aqua-environments, digestive systems of insects, marine life, mammals, etc.) which means as a probiotic they are evolutionarily supported – a true probiotic.
  • Spores remain dormant until they get to the intestinal tract and then they colonize the bowel.
  • They are universally found in the human microbiota. They are normal organisms of our digestive tract.
  • There is a LONG history of use in industries where efficacy is closely measured, for example the pharmaceutical and agriculture industries.
  • Human studies have proven spores to be extremely safe and efficient.

Spore bacteria that are not in spore state will be destroyed by the stomach acid just like any other bacteria. The key is cultivating the spores using technology that ensures that the bacteria are maintained in spore form until it gets past the stomach and into the small intestine.

Physicians Exclusive Licenses the Technology

As I mentioned in the beginning, I’ve been obsessed with helping my patients heal from digestive challenges that were painful, limiting or controlling their lives. When I first learned about the potential of spore bacteria I knew I had to take action. I so deeply believed in the results of the research that I acquired the exclusive rights to distribute this patented product in the United States. I formed a new company – Physician’s Exclusive, LLC – of which I am the President.

The mission of this email is to introduce you to MegaSpore Biotic, the first of its kind, all-spore, pharmaceutical grade probiotic with the patented carotenoid rich HU36 strain. Here’s what you need to know:

  • It was developed under the advisement of spore expert Dr. Simon Cutting, Ph.D., by a practitioner for exclusive distribution by medical practitioners.
  • It utilizes verified, branded and registered strains – the only way to ensure proper characterization. Guaranteed prescription-grade and licensed from Royal Holloway at London University.
  • It is the only nutritional supplement probiotic on the market that contains Bacillus Clausii – a strain tested for more than 50 years, and is the best-selling probiotic prescription product in the world.
  • It contains five bacillus spore probiotics– the value of each strain is substantiated by a history of use and published science.
  • All strains are produced in a GMP facility under drug manufacturing guidelines.
  • It is the single-most, powerful spore probiotic formulation, and it delivers more than four billion live probiotic cells daily – a dose that matches and exceeds all prescription products of the same strains.
  • It is blended with a pre-biotic to enhance GI tract colonization
  • Its 100 percent spore format guarantees maximum survivability and precise dosing
  • It is the most broad-spectrum probiotic. The clinically studied strains used in the formulation offer more than 35 indications for use in practice.
  • It is the FIRST probiotic formulation to deliver powerful, highly-bioavailable carotenoids via in-vivo production. Bacillus indicus is a patented, carotenoid rich strain.

Not only have we established and demonstrated that Megaspore Biotic delivers the true probiotic function, but there are also the added health benefits of these bacteria-manufacturing nutrients, such as B-Vitamins, Nattokinase, Vitamin K2, Quinols and Carotenoids. The spore formulation makes it possible for these nutrients to be produced at the site of absorption so they are considered the most bioavailable nutrients. In particular, the carotenoids in Megaspore Biotic have been extensively documented and identified as alpha carotene, beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, asaxanthin, lycopene and lutein. These are all, exceptionally beneficial antioxidants that have excellent free radical quenching activity.

Why Megaspore Biotic is superior to any other Probiotic

Let’s review the HMP project criteria for probiotics:

1. Must have a position in the microbiota

MegaSpore Biotic qualifies! All strains in MegaSpore Biotic are human derived and have a firm place in the microbiota.

2.  Must have sufficient numbers to colonize and cause stimulation for benefit.

MegaSpore Biotic  is dosed at a concentration that is 2000 times higher than the native population in the GI tract.

3.   Supplemented Probiotics, by evolution, should naturally occur in the environment (where they gain exposure to the host) and be stable both in the environment and the GI tract.

MegaSpore Biotic is nature’s very own probiotic. Spores use the environment as a vector for transfer from host to host and are uniquely adapted to be stable in the environment and in the GI tract. We are capturing the power of millions of years of evolution in every dose.

Dr. Tom Bayne, D.C.

The Best Way to Beat a Cold or the Flu is to PREVENT it – Get Started Today!

The fall season is here and with its arrival we’re experiencing cooler temperatures. You can take action today to prepare yourself and your family for the coming “cold and flu season.”  Prevention is the key!

The Real Reason You Become Ill

Most people believe they can catch a cold or the flu from other people. You’ll often hear someone say, “The flu is going around,” and then express concern that they may get it from an ill person who shares their workspace or living environment.

But the truth is only a small percentage of people exposed to a pathogen will become ill. The vast majority will not experience any symptoms at all! That’s because viruses and bacteria are not the only source of colds or the flu. The internal environment of your body is the real reason you’re susceptible to colds, flu or any other infections. Germs will only lead to illness when the body is out of balance and the immune system is in a weakened state.

Factors that contribute to the body being out of balance and a weakened immune system include poor nutrition, dehydration, overuse of antibiotics, lack of sleep, excessive environmental toxins, and physical, mental or emotional stress. By making a few key changes now, however, it’s possible for you and your family to avoid becoming ill this winter.

Take the offense

At Pure Balance Natural Family Health Center, we offer a simple and gentle approach to prevention: Pure Balance Botanical Remedies PureLung and PureLymph. These remedies are the perfect combination of herbs, which work synergistically to boost your body’s immune system and bolster its ability to defend against bacteria and viruses. In addition, this combination actually destroys and eliminates any existing infections in the body.*

Coupled with keeping your body well-hydrated, and eating a balanced, predominantly alkaline diet, taking 30 drops, one time per day of PureLung and PureLymph is the best offense for keeping your body in balance and able to prevent colds or flu.

All of the PureBalance Botanicals are manufactured in a unique way, based on the ancient tradition of spagyrics processing, which makes them the most complete and potent botanical remedies available anywhere!  In addition, all PureBalance botanicals use herbal ingredients that are organic or wild crafted.

Just in case:  The Best Response

Sometimes the levels of stress in your life can deplete the immune system, making an even well-balanced body susceptible to illness. In that case, a fast response to the onset of cold or flu symptoms can greatly shorten the duration of being ill.

The first step is recognizing the changes in your body as soon as occur:  a runny nose, glassy eyes, sore throat, headache, sinus pain, cough or fatigue are the most common, first signs of a cold or the flu.

When those signs appear, immediately increase the dosage of PureLung and PureLymph to 30 drops, three times per day. These same botanicals serve as both a barrier to entry and the ammunition to eliminate infection.

Also be sure to drink plenty of water and other warm liquids (like our yummy soup recipe), and get extra rest.

Check Your Vitamin D Levels before Winter Arrives

One of the best ways to ensure your immune system is up for the cold-weather battle is to check your serum vitamin D levels.  Low levels of vitamin D are associated with weather=related depression, low immunity and increased risks for infection. Call our office today to schedule a vitamin D assessment.

If Infection Sets in…

If a routine cold turns into full blown sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) or an upper respiratory infection, consider Neurological Stress Reduction Therapy (NSRT).  NSRT will help us better understand the nature of the infection, as well as check the function of all the systems of the body. The subsequent protocols we develop will work specifically against the type of infection your body is experiencing, and work to reverse the organ and gland weaknesses responsible for chronic infection.

A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that antibiotic therapy for sinusitis was ineffective.  However, sinusitis does respond very well to acupuncture sessions at our clinic. The best results are achieved when acupuncture is combined with low level laser for specific anti-inflammatory and immune boosting effects.

Keep Your College Students Healthy and Smart!

Over the next few weeks, many of the young adults I’ve been seeing in my practice for upwards of 10 years will be leaving for college. I have proudly watched them grow up and accomplish many great things. Although most of the parents with whom I’ve spoken are ready for their children to leave the nest, they frequently ask what they can do to help their children remain healthy while away at school.

Like their parents, I’m concerned about the traditional college campus lifestyle where fast food is king; soda and caffeine are used as stimulants to help fight the need for sleep, and alcohol consumption is used to numb the stress. At the same time, I know it’s unrealistic to believe that college students will fill their plates with broccoli at every opportunity. That’s why nutritional supplementation is a simple and affordable way to bridge the dietary gaps and keep your child’s immune system vibrant and strong. Think of it as a College Survival Kit.

While we know important nutritive components will either be missing or limited in the average college student diet, I’d like to focus on the essential role of greens, fats, and probiotics in fostering strong immunity and mental clarity. A concentrated, green-superfood supplement will not only provide some of the needed four to six daily servings of greens, but also essential vitamins and minerals that alkalize the body. Fish oil will lubricate their brains with the proper fats, which will enhance and improve concentration. Fish oil also is vital for boosting immunity, especially during the winter.

Probiotics are the single best supplement for your college student’s optimal immunity. The beneficial bacteria will help remove the unwanted sugars and refined carbohydrates from the intestinal tract while selectively protecting the intestines from the types of yeast and bacterial infections that foster colds, flu or food poisoning.

The PureBalance College Survival Kit consists of proprietary formulas of PureBalance Living Fiber, Pure Fish Oil, and Florabalance, which will provide your child with the real competitive advantage necessary for success in collage, as well as the ability to remain vibrant, focused and healthy throughout the school year.

A healthy diet, proper rest, staying hydrated, getting appropriate exercise, and whole food supplementation are the best tools anyone can use to restore or maintain health, no matter what their age or stress level. But if you can’t get your college students to take the supplements for the immune-boosting benefits, be sure to let them know that Pure Balance Living Fiber and Florabalance have the added benefit of hangover relief when they drink responsibly! The B-vitamins in Living Fiber help keep the brain hydrated and the probiotic bacteria will consume the sugars before they speed the dehydration process. For best results take 2-3 capsules of Living Fiber and 1 capsule of Florabalance before going out. Upon return, take the same dosage again with at least 12 ounces of filtered water. Be sure to encourage them to eat a high protein breakfast, such as eggs, in the morning!

This month, we have a Back-to-School special on the PureBalance College Survival Kit. Stock up and make sure the health and well-being of your children will be protected while they’re away from home.
