Forget What You Know About Probiotics and Gut Health!

As I alerted you earlier this week, I’m writing to share some exciting information and clinical results about a product that I discovered and have been researching for the past two years. More importantly, this discovery has already yielded amazing results! Let me begin by telling you a couple of stories:

J.S. is a 53 year-old female with a history of transient irritable bowel attacks. The episodes usually lasted between two and three weeks, with the symptoms gradually subsiding over time. When J.S. came to see me, she had been experiencing acute abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea for three days. She was given Megaspore Biotic. The most in-depth research ever conducted on probiotics

Before I tell you more about Megaspore Biotic, I have to share the research, which will provide the context for your understanding why this is a major breakthrough.

Five years ago, the National Institute of Health (NIH) began the Human Microbiome Project (HMP). Two hundred scientists from 83 of the world’s top universities contributed their expertise to research and better understand the bacteria living in and on our bodies, and the role it plays in health and disease. The findings, which were first published in 2012, were astonishing. Here is what we NOW know:

  • We are more bacteria than human – 10 trillion human cells vs. 100 trillion bacteria cells.
  • There are more than 1,000 different species of microorganisms in each individual’s digestive tract out of nearly 35,000 possible species.
  • Bacterial genes outnumber human genes 150-to-1 (25,000 human genes vs. 3.3 million microbial genes).
  • No two individuals have the exact same composition – not even twins.
  • Disease is associated with a disruption of the ecology of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract (Crohn’s disease, IBS, asthma and even obesity)

In an effort to understand the role of supplemental probiotics (beneficial bacteria that can enter and inhabit the gut) in health and disease, the researchers recognized the need to define the function of the probiotic. These criteria are the result of millions of dollars of research; the most in-depth probiotic research ever conducted:

  • In order to act as a probiotic, the bacteria must be a species that normally occurs in the individual’s digestive tract. It must have a position in the microbiota or it won’t be able to settle and colonize.
  • Probiotics offer benefits through their stimulatory effects on the immune system in the gut and by reaching a critical mass to produce beneficial compounds. To be of benefit, it must have higher numbers than what naturally exists in the gut to colonize and cause stimulation.
  • Supplemented probiotics, by evolution, should naturally occur in the environment (where they gain exposure to the host) and be stable both in the environment and the GI tract.

Results that can’t be denied

You may be surprised to learn that based on these criteria, every commercially available probiotic currently sold in drugstores, physicians’ offices, and local health food stores don’t fit the bill. Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp. are the dominant probiotic strains in commercially available probiotic supplements and commonly added to foods. While it’s true that these bacteria do occur naturally in the intestinal tract, there are a few additional facts that the research brought to light.

The populations of Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp. are first introduced to our systems via our mothers – through natural (vaginal) childbirth and breast-feeding. They are GI tract anaerobes, meaning they can’t sustain themselves in an oxygen-rich environment outside of the GI tract.

Secondly, these are some of the most predominant organisms in our digestive system with upwards of 20 trillion of these bugs in an average intestinal tract. In order for probiotics to have an immune-stimulating effect they need to be supplemented in concentrations higher than what naturally exists. The best of these commercially available products claim upwards of 100 billion organisms per dose, which isn’t even close to the 20 trillion already there. Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp., even at dosages of 100 billion, simply can’t offer healthy immune-stimulation from dose-to-dose. It’s like adding a single drop of dye to a swimming pool and hoping to change the color of the water in the entire pool.

During studies of the oral administration of Lactobacillus sp., HMP researchers found that there was absolutely no impact on the concentrations of these organisms in the GI tract. They concluded that close to 100 percent of the lactobacilli were destroyed by the stomach acid before they could even reach the lower GI tract.

The bottom line: Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp. cannot survive the harsh conditions of the stomach when supplemented orally and their numbers are influenced most by the birth process and the first year of life. After that, the numbers stay pretty constant throughout our lives. Consequently, Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp should not be classified as probiotics but rather be classified as normally occurring organisms that inhabit our gut (gut commensal organisms).

HMP turns Probiotic Industry Upside Down

It is very important to say at this time that Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp products have been somewhat beneficial. I have used them for years and my own experience has taught me that some patients benefited from the supplementation of these organisms. I believe that future research will show that these organisms, even when they are dead, will positively impact the pH of the intestinal tract, which can be very beneficial to someone with digestive symptoms.

At the same time, this information also explains the limited benefits experienced after oral supplementation of Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp, and why they don’t last long after supplementation stops. The transient effect associated with pH changes requires daily dosing with no long-term benefits once supplementation ceases, and the benefits offer relief for a very small number of conditions. Whatever the reason may be, the facts are the facts. Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp supplements are not capable of consistently modulating immune function in the gut, and immune modulation is a key quality for a true probiotic organism. Remember: Nearly 80 percent of our immune function is in the GI tract. True probiotics play a major role in its form and function. Thus, if a probiotic can’t effectively enter, colonize and create the immune stimulation, by definition, it’s not a probiotic!

Based on the results of the Human Microbiome Project’s research of bacteria, the crashing noise that you now hear is the probiotic industry turned upside down. Thankfully, the research also found the real answer.

Introducing Spore Bacteria

The answer is Spores! Spore-form bacteria are robust organisms that can survive the harsh environment of the stomach 100 percent intact. Through the evolutionary process, nature designed them to be transferred from human-to-human via the environment and food. They have evolved to be very stable in the environment and also to colonize the GI tract very effectively. In fact, studies have shown that certain developments of the human immune system specifically require spores.

What do we know about spores?

  • They are found all over the environment (soil, vegetation, dust, rocks, aqua-environments, digestive systems of insects, marine life, mammals, etc.) which means as a probiotic they are evolutionarily supported – a true probiotic.
  • Spores remain dormant until they get to the intestinal tract and then they colonize the bowel.
  • They are universally found in the human microbiota. They are normal organisms of our digestive tract.
  • There is a LONG history of use in industries where efficacy is closely measured, for example the pharmaceutical and agriculture industries.
  • Human studies have proven spores to be extremely safe and efficient.

Spore bacteria that are not in spore state will be destroyed by the stomach acid just like any other bacteria. The key is cultivating the spores using technology that ensures that the bacteria are maintained in spore form until it gets past the stomach and into the small intestine.

De-junk your diet! Processed foods are rich in one thing and that is trans fats, the worst fat you can consume. Why are trans fats unhealthy?

Trans fat may increase the levels of “bad” cholesterol in your body and decrease your levels of “good” cholesterol doing nothing good for your heart. Small amounts of trans fat occur naturally in foods such as milk, butter and animal meat. But this type of trans fat doesn’t seem to be as harmful to your health as the trans fat found in commercially prepared baked goods, fried foods and snack foods.

Read food labels carefully and check for trans fat. Food labels must list trans fat, total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol. Trans fat will appear in the ingredient list as “hydrogenated vegetable oil” or “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.”

When you read a nutrition label, keep in mind that companies are allowed to list the amount of trans fat as “0 grams” if the product contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving. This means that your food may still contain some trans fat even if the nutrition label says “0 grams” per serving, be aware of foods that say “trans fat free” on the package. Better yet, eat a diet rich in fruit and veggies…no label to decipher!

Steps to Create Lasting Changes

With the New Year just around the corner, many people are beginning to think about their annual list of New Year’s Resolutions. You know the list – change the diet, exercise more, drink less, quit smoking, save more money, be kind to the in-laws, etc. For some of us, the effort to change rarely lasts longer than 30 days. However, we want to help you stay on track with your goals by providing specific steps you can take to create lasting changes in 2013.

Dr. Joe Dispenza (www.drjoedispenza.com) is a leading brain and change expert, as well as author of several best-selling books, including Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself . Dr. Dispenza’s research has shown that the “brain is the organ of change.” When we learn even one new bit of information, he writes, tiny brain cells make new connections within the brain, a concept in neuroscience referred to as neuroplasticity. To make lasting change, Dr. Dispenza says, “we have to mentally rehearse daily what it would be like to experience the transformation” so that the internal changes necessary to achieve the goals can take place.

One of the most effective ways to create lasting change is to “mentally rehearse” using daily affirmations.

What are Affirmations?

Scientists have now been able to demonstrate that there’s a direct link between our thoughts and our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Thoughts are a form of energy. Every thought you have has either a high vibration of energy (positive thoughts) or a low vibration of energy (negative thoughts). Affirmations are a conscious effort to positively reprogram the subconscious mind (storehouse of thoughts, feelings and beliefs) in order to create lasting change.

Affirmations are positive, present tense statements, which specifically detail what you intend to create in your life. Writing down an affirmation is like planting a seed within the subconscious mind; saying the affirmation aloud is akin to watering it. Change begins to blossom and then flourish in your life. You know an affirmation is effective if it resonates with your heart and gives you goose bumps when you read it or say it aloud.

Tips for Creating Effective Affirmations

The key to creating effective affirmations is beginning with an “attitude of gratitude” for everything that happens. That may be the toughest pill to swallow. However, the truth is every experience we have, both positive and negative, makes us grow. When we respond to every aspect of life with appreciation we open our hearts to all possibilities, and are open to learning the value of everything that happens to us.

You don’t necessarily have to believe your affirmation is possible. But by taking these extra steps, you can expedite change:

  • Set an intention: Make sure your affirmation is simple and clear, and includes action words, such as, “I will….” Instead of “I want….”
  • Be emotionally connected to the outcome: It’s important that you have an emotional connection to the affirmation – that you feel it in your heart when you read it or say it aloud. As Dr. Dispenza writes, fostering new brain cells creates the internal change necessary to support the external change.
  • Be ready to change: It’s hard to lose weight, for example, if you’re doing it because you “should” rather than because you’re passionate about having vibrant health.
  • Repeat the affirmation daily: Best-selling author, metaphysical teacher and healer Louise Hay persistently used affirmations and was able to heal from cancer. When reciting affirmations, she recommends looking in the mirror and gazing deeply into your own eyes.
  • Imagine the future:  Envision the outcome in your mind’s eye whenever you recite the affirmation. With gratitude, act as if your goal has already been achieved.

Write Your 2013 Affirmations:

  1. Begin with “I am happy and grateful for…
  2. State your affirmation as if it is already reality.
  3. Affirm what you want, rather than what you don't want. For example: "I am no longer sick,” or “I am no longer in debt.” Instead, affirm: "I am happy and grateful for the perfect health in body, mind and spirit that I am experiencing now,“ or “I am happy and grateful for the financial abundance I am experiencing now.” These statements reinforce your desired goal without confusing your subconscious mind with the mention of your current condition.

Five Healthy Tips to Help You Enjoy the Holiday Season

The holiday season is almost here! Beginning with Thanksgiving and continuing until New Year’s Day, there are 40 days and 40 nights of opportunities to eat, drink and be merry!

As you know, too much of a good thing can be detrimental -- sugar, alcohol and poor food choices can wreak havoc on the immune system. But you don’t have to crash and burn-out your health during the holidays. Instead, prepare to enjoy all of the fun and celebrations by following these five healthy lifestyle tips, which are both preventative and curative in the event you do overindulge:

1. Eat two servings of organic fruit and seven servings of organic vegetables every single day. The majority of fruit and vegetables are nutrient dense, high in fiber and low in calories. They also contain a number of essential vitamins and minerals that cannot be found in other types of foods.

Two servings of fruit and seven servings of vegetables will help the body maintain the alkaline pH it needs to fight pain, illness and fatigue. Sound like a lot of produce? You can easily achieve these goals by eating soups, salads or by drinking green drinks and smoothies.

2. Decipher and manage cravings. One of the biggest challenges during the holiday season is to manage food cravings. Dr. Mom’s Tips to Start The New School Year Off With Better Eating Habits

Children need a wide variety of foods to meet their nutritional needs for growth and hormonal balance, as well as foods that fuel the brain to help them pay attention in school. But parents often complain to me that their kids won’t eat anything healthy because they are picky eaters. As a mother of three children, I am sympathetic. But I also remind them that it is the parents, not the children, who pay for the food at the grocery store checkout. If our children are picky eaters it’s because of us!

School lunches and the “Kid’s Menu” at restaurants complicate the issue. They often consist of grilled cheese, cheese pizza and “mac and cheese.” These commercially prepared foods fill your child’s stomach, but provide absolutely no health benefits. Green vegetables or quality proteins are nowhere to be found. Unfortunately, a diet filled with white flour, white sugar, white rice, concentrated juices, food coloring, sucralose (i.e. Splenda), aspartame (i.e. Nutrasweet), and high fructose corn syrup can lead to your children suffering with a slew of allergies, attention issues, skin rashes and/or constipation.

Studies show that dietary habits forged in childhood are likely to persist into adulthood, so the lessons we teach our children about eating can last throughout their lifetime. It’s never too late for you to reform your own eating habits, and create a healthier future for your children.

Make the changing of eating habits a back-to-school project for your entire family. Keep in mind, the process begins with changing YOUR mindset and YOUR habits so that you can help expand your children’s food horizons. Have a family meeting to discuss the benefits of healthy eating. When everyone believes that they’re capable of “learning to like new foods,” the change can begin. Drop the label “picky eaters” and start referring to your children as “good eaters.” With your assistance and consistency, they’ll soon grow into that new moniker.

Nutrition is essential

The goal is to make sure your children’s meals include good fats, quality proteins, green vegetables and unrefined complex carbohydrates. The right kinds of fats are super important, because they’re essential for proper brain function. Good sources of essential fatty acids (EFAs) are raw almonds or raw walnuts; grass fed meats and eggs; avocados, organic poultry; sustainably caught, cold water fish, such as salmon, tuna and trout, avocado and flax seeds. When cooking, only use unrefined and organic olive or coconut oil.

Cooking? Yes. The first and most important step you must take to change your family’s eating  habits is to prepare the majority of your meals at home. Save restaurant eating for special occasions, or limit it to one time per week. If you serve a grain, use brown rice, or experiment with higher protein grains like quinoa. Involve your children in the food preparation process. In that way, they’ll not only begin to learn to cook, they’ll grow to understand that the time spent making meals is also an act of love.

 

Five Easy Steps for Enhancing Your Child’s Ability to Do Well in School

1.     Start the day off with protein. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Consider omelets, boiled eggs, yogurt with fruit, cottage cheese with fruit, almond butter on sprouted toast, or a slice of almond banana bread (see recipes). Eating small portions of protein throughout the day, such as raw nuts, keeps your child’s energy balanced throughout the day.

2.     Drink lots of water. The brain is comprised of about 80% water. Increasing your child’s water intake to a minimum of four to eight, 8-ounce glasses of filtered water every day will improve every function of their body – from energy level to brain function. Sodas, Gatorade, tea, slurpies, etc., are liquids, but are not the same as water. Water is essential to the body’s optimal function.

3.     Prepare healthy lunches and after-school snacks; make dinner a family affair: Purchase insulated lunch bags for your children and send them off to school with the nutritional punch they’ll need to get through the day. 4.     Spend time outdoors: Spend at least 30 minutes outdoors every day, either exercising together or playing together.

5.   Make time for rest: When we rest, is when the body is restored. Children need much more sleep than adults. Make sure your children get at least nine or 10 hours every night, and watch those grades rise!
