Foods containing lots of calcium

Calcium Good or Bad?

The worldwide calcium supplement market is worth a whopping $3 billion a year.

Every day women all over the world take calcium tablets and capsules under the premise that they are doing something healthy for themselves. They are told by doctors and specialists calcium will prevent osteoporosis.

A study in the British Medical journal showed that calcium supplementation actually increases the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes in elderly women.

How could this be? Atherosclerosis is the progressive narrowing and hardening of the arteries due to calcium deposits in the lining of the arterial wall, and it is a precursor to cardiovascular disease.

How does the calcium get in the arterial walls? The typical diet that is high in protein, dairy, and phosphorus (from carbonated drinks) acidifies the body causing large amounts of calcium to be pulled from the bones and calcium supplements in order to offset the acid. The large amount of circulating calcium gets deposited in the arterial walls and forms atherosclerotic plaques which weaken the vascular system and increase the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes. A published report in the New England journal of medicine confirmed that the accumulation of calcium in coronary arteries was a better predictor of future heart attack or other heart issues than cholesterol, or other standard risk factors.

So, what's a person to do?

  • Step 1: add more vegetables and green food supplements to alkalinize your system.
  • Step 2: Your calcium supplement should be balanced with all the alkaline mineral cofactors like magnesium, boron, manganese, zinc and potassium. But most importantly you need to take vitamin K2. Numerous research studies have demonstrated that Vitamin K2 is a calcium transporter-carrying calcium to the bones. The studies go further to show that small amounts of K2 actually remove calcium from plaques in the arteries (improving your cardiovascular health) and deposits the calcium in the bones (improving your bone health).

And get this, Gouda and Edam cheese have high levels of K2. Taking a slice of these cheeses daily is good for your heart and bones! If Vitamin K2 is not part of your calcium supplement be sure to add K2 today! Your heart and bones depend on it!

New Year, New You? The Best Detox to Shape Up, Slim Down and Feel GREAT

I always enjoy the holidays: the food, the fun, the vacations and the celebrations. It's a time to be with family and friends and…it's a time to eat...a lot. I admit that I indulge in holiday goodies right along with the best of them. And as I get settled into the New Year, like so many others, I realize it's time to get back on track with my health, shed a few pounds and get clear on my goals.

What I love about the work I do, is that often, my goals are so like those of my clients. I want to feel my best, to do rewarding work and to make a difference.

And most of all, I want it to be simple and enjoyable. Because that’s what life is about, isn’t it? So one of the things I reflected on, while on vacation during the holidays is this idea about New Year"s resolutions.

When we make New Year's resolutions, we are often creating a big, long list of goals that many times, simply adds to the long list of "to do's" we never seem to have time for anyway.

So I committed to make my New Year's resolutions - and health in general for my clients, and myself much simpler this year.

New Year’s Resolution #1 - Set Your Own Pace for Good Health

First of all, let’s think about a healthy mindset or attitude, if you will.

When it comes to good health, it seems like most of what we hear or read about are these "all or nothing approaches." In 2009, I resolve to throw those out. We don't need to be perfect, we just need to be a little better here and there.

For example, if you had a bad lunch, have a healthy dinner. It’s as simple as that. Instead of having to be perfect all day, you move the dial a bit higher one meal at a time.

Any day, week or year is full of challenges and opportunities, so how about focusing on each day, each meal, and each moment as an opportunity to do something a little better than you did before?

For too many people, this idea of "being healthy" becomes something that's unattainable. Set up your own goals! Decide what feels right for you. Instead of worrying about the past, trust that you're working in the right direction.

Make sure your intentions are going in the right direction. It doesn't matter who you are, you can decide what level of effort works for you. Once you accomplish that, then think about moving up a level. Health is not about perfection; it's about taking steps that feel right to you, at your own pace.

New Year’s Resolution #2 - Decide to Detox

We live in a toxic world; it’s an unfortunate fact. Everything from your food, water, the environment and even your home, has toxins. We can't escape them.

Let's look at one small example: lawn care products. For the last 50 years, people have been spraying toxic chemicals on their lawns to make them greener. In fact, about 67 million pounds of synthetic pesticides are used in America annually. 1 Instead of breaking down, these toxins are accumulating as the years pass. We are the next generation in the toxic world. Generations before us didn't have as much toxicity and generations after will have more.

Detoxing is more important than ever because our generation has to go a step further than the one before. We have a responsibility to clean up the world and we can start by cleaning up our bodies to feel our best.

But the good news is we can make changes that drastically reduce our toxic burden. We can detoxify our bodies, detoxify our homes and chose toxin-free personal care products to boost our health, energy and longevity.

And there's one more, critical step you can take to create and maintain your best health. You can resolve to detoxify regularly.

After the holiday indulgences, my wife, Dr. Ingrid Maes, and I decided to commit to our own detox program. The thing about a detox program is that it works on all levels, mind, body and spirit. As toxins release from your body, you may notice that you think more clearly, feel more energy and experience more joy.

There's a reason for that! Detoxification is about removing the toxic burden from your body. Think about carrying something very heavy for a long time and then putting it down. There's tremendous relief. You can move more freely. Detoxification works in much the same way.

What is a Detox Program?

A detoxification program is a focused set of actions with the specific goal to reduce the toxic load in your body. Typical detox programs last anywhere from a week to six months and focus on cleansing your major organs of detoxification:

  • Skin
  • Lungs
  • Liver
  • Kidneys
  • Intestines

Detox programs often use a combination of healthy food, exercise, breathing and all natural herbal or botanical supplements to open up your detoxification pathways.

How to Begin A Detox Program

First and foremost, it helps to have guidance in any detox program. This is why we started the New Year, New You Detox Program at PureBalance Natural Health Center. We have many detoxification assessments and therapies for our clients, but we also began to get requests for detox guidance from people outside our local area.

Our New Year, New You Detox Program is a way to get low cost guidance for your detoxification program over the phone. Because we believe in starting where you are, instead of offering programs "for the masses," this program is customized for your specific detox goals.

Whether you do our program or another, getting guidance can help you identify what the appropriate level of detox is for your current health picture.

A typical detox program might start with cleansing your intestines, with a small amount of focus on your liver and gall bladder as well. This would include making dietary changes to support opening these detoxification pathways.

From there, you'd focus more on your liver and gall bladder, then your kidneys, then skin and lungs.

In addition to diet and supplements, excellent cleansing practices include: dry skin brushing, rebounding (jumping on a mini-trampoline to help your lymph cleanse) and doing deep breathing exercises to cleanse your lungs and strengthen your diaphragm and core.

Some detox programs focus only on one organ, like the large intestine, for example. These can be very valuable and we encourage our clients to move toward a full body detox at least once per year.

How Often Should You Detox?

How often you detox depends of your current level of health. Some people like to do one detox program per year, while others like to detoxify four times per year - one with each season.

I recently realized it had been a year since my last detox and since starting my own detox program this year, I feel so great that I've resolved to do a personal detox program at least 4 times per year.

Maintaining your improved health after your detox is easy if you focus on making one better decision each day. Keep it simple; maybe start by choosing cleaning products and personal care products that are toxin free to replace the ones you used to use.

The detoxification protocols I recommend in the New Year, New You Detox Program are not system for the "elite." This is detoxification for REAL people...for everyone, from beginners who've never heard of detox to those who are committed to regular detox.

Who Needs to Detox?

Everyone needs to detox, even people eating healthy and exercising regularly. As long as there are toxins in the world, we can all benefit from a detoxification program.

What Are the Benefits of a Detox Program?

There are many benefits of a detoxification program. Some of them are:

  • Increased energy
  • Better immunity
  • Weight loss
  • Reduction or elimination of symptoms like: headaches, skin problems, respiratory problems, digestive problems, insomnia, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia
  • Better memory and concentration

New Year’s Resolution #3 - Make YOU Your Top Priority

It's important to take time out for your detoxification program, so resolve to make YOU your top priority and take a few things off your "to do" list. You deserve to feel your best and experience the renewed energy and enthusiasm that comes from detoxification.

Here’s to a healthy, happy 2009!

Family in the Kitchen

Detoxify Your Home to Boost Your Immunity

Safe Havens?

We think of our homes as safe havens, protecting our families. But did you know that there are hundreds of toxic chemicals in your household that can harm your health?

A study by the State of Massachusetts found that 50% of all illness is due to poor indoor air quality.1

Additionally, the National Toxicology Program found that 150 chemicals can be found in the average home.2

You might be surprised about where toxins lurk, but don’t despair – there are easy, natural alternatives!

But first, here are some facts you should know about toxic chemicals and your health3:

  • 75,000 synthetic (man-made) chemicals are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). 250 billion pounds of these chemicals are produced every year.
  • According to the EPA, only a fraction of these have been fully tested for human health concerns.
  • Synthetic chemicals have been found in the blood of children and adults, even in the cord blood of newborns:
    • Analysis of cord blood of newborn babies at Mt Sinai Hospital found more than 200 chemicals already in the blood stream at birth.
    • A recent study on adults found a total of more than 200 synthetic chemicals in their blood -- with an average of 67 different chemicals in each individual.
  • Serious illnesses are increasing among children and adults:
    • Toxic chemicals in the home and household cleaners are associated with allergies, birth defects, cancer, and psychological or neurological disorders.
    • 90% of poison exposures occur in the home. In fact, women who work at home have a 54% greater death rate from cancer, according to a 15-year study reported at the 1990 Toronto Indoor Air Conference. This study concluded that the increase resulted from increased exposures to toxins in the home.4
    • Women who use dry cleaning may have increased risk of developing breast cancer.5

The main culprit for toxic chemicals in your home are air fresheners and household cleaning products, like drain cleaners, liquid dish soap, oven cleaners, all purpose cleaners and furniture polish.

Additionally, building materials, furniture fabrics and new carpeting all add to exposure to toxic chemicals in your home.

Another common household product, Teflon (found in non-stick pans and fabrics), was banned by the Swedish government due to increased risk of breast cancer.6

What the advertisements don’t tell you is that women who use non-stick pans and stain-resistant fabrics risk harming their baby’s health too.

The toxins in Teflon and stain resistant fabrics do NOT break down and instead, accumulate in your body.7 In one study, researchers found toxic chemicals from non-stick pans and stain resistant fabrics in the breast milk of every woman tested.8

(While breast milk is still the healthiest form of nourishment for your newborn, it’s important to know that your exposure to toxic chemicals also affects your baby.)

It may seem like toxins are everywhere…and while they really are a fact of life in today’s world, it’s easy to reduce your toxic load! These days, there are non-toxic alternatives for just about everything you use in your home.

Reduce Toxic Load for Overall Health

So how can reducing exposure to toxic chemicals improve your health?

Our last two articles had several tips for a detoxification diet and breast health, so these tips focus on two easy steps to detoxify your home:

  1. Choose non-toxic alternatives - Look around your home and begin to look for non-toxic alternatives to common toxic household goods. At PureBalance Natural Health Center, Dr. Ingrid Maes and I do extensive research on safe household cleaning and beauty products. Whether you come visit the center and shop our store or purchase products online, here are some that we highly recommend:
    • Ecover– from dish liquid to laundry detergent and household cleaners, Ecover is a truly “green” (chemical free) product that does not test on animals.
    • Le Creuset Cookware– Le Creuset is enamel coated cast-iron, which is a healthy alternative to toxic aluminum or Teflon coated pans. While Le Creuset cannot compete with Teflon for it’s non-stick properties, isn’t your family’s health worth a little extra elbow grease?
    • Non-Toxic (“Green”) Furniture & Paint – Did you know that most furniture today is coated with toxins to make them stain resistant or inflammable? Because of this, many people are choosing to buy antique furniture. If you are looking for beautiful modern designs, consider our favorite find, Green Nest. You can also avoid VOCs with Zero VOC and Low paint from Green Nest! Created by a husband and wife team of green builders, Green Nest many safe, non-toxic products a healthy, toxin-free home!
  2. Clear the air – the air in your home or office can be up to ten times worse than the air outdoors! Protect yourself from toxins in the air like pet dander, mold, pollen, radon, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and more by using an air purifier.

Now that you are thinking differently about the products you use in your home and the air you breathe, the next step would be to begin looking at your personal care products, like soaps, lotions and other beauty products.

Stay tuned for future articles on healthy skin and beauty products, along with more tips to enjoy your best health!

At PureBalance Natural Health Center, we are committed to helping you detoxify your body, your lifestyle AND your home.

Discover Two Simple, Yet Powerful Steps For Lasting Health!

Key Points
Your Body At A Glance - Your body is made up of cells that band together to create tissues. Tissues group together to make organs and glands, and organs and glands group together to make up the systems of the body!
Root Cause of Illness – Inflammation and poor digestion are culprits behind many unwanted symptoms, illness and aging. The good news is, you can heal both!
Balance is Critical - For overall health, Rejuvenating your body is just as important as Detoxification.
The PureBalance Method for Health & Healing helps nourish, restore, balance and detoxify your body right down to the cellular level.

Want to know how to achieve your best health, so you can feel fabulous again?

The PureBalance Method (PBM) is a complete system for healing that goes beyond physical detoxification. We help you create balance through two simple, yet critical steps: (1) targeted detoxification that rids your body of toxins (2) system restoration that rejuvenates your organs and glands, bringing the systems of your body into balance.

Discover PureBalance's Two Simple, Yet Powerful Steps For Lasting Health:

1) Targeted Detoxification Therapy (TDT)

PureBalance focuses on detoxification at the mind, body and spirit level. To find out why this is so important and why it sets PureBalance above other detoxification programs, read: Scientific Evidence: The Mind, Body, Spirit Connection & Your Health.

Focus: Detoxify Your Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Levels For True Well Being

  • Open Your Body’s Detoxification Pathways– Many people are exposed to toxins from their food, air and water. Your body’s detoxification pathways are the highways through which the toxins move out of your body.  The 5 major detox pathways are: your skin, lungs, liver, kidneys and intestines.
  • Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Detoxification– Often during detoxification the body will release stored emotion. Have you ever felt angry or depressed 2-3 days after you eliminate unhealthy foods from your diet completely? Have you ever experienced or observed in a friend or colleague the emotional release on day 3 of quitting coffee? Chinese medicine teaches us that our organs and glands not only become congested with physical waste, but also our repressed emotions. The release of these emotional toxins is a natural part of the cleansing process. However, most detox programs do not support you in allowing this holistic process to take place effectively. At PureBalance, our protocol is designed to help you heal on all levels – mind, body and spirit -- for lasting health and well-being.

PureBalance Detoxification Protocol:

Bottom Line: Your body cannot heal if your detoxification pathways are blocked. Furthermore, your emotional and spiritual health play a key role in your physical health. Detoxifying at the mind, body and spirit level can help create lasting health.

2) System Restoration Program (SRP)

The missing link in most detoxification programs, this is the component that nourishes your organs, glands, tissues and cells, so that your body can regenerate and heal. Most detox programs fall short in that they only assist in the elimination of waste.  System restoration occurs when the organs and glands are built back up after the sludge has been eliminated.  This requires whole food nutrition and a supplement program that alkalizes your body, corrects all digestive weaknesses, and controls inflammation, thereby bringing system balance.

Focus: Heal the Root Cause of All Illness
  • Heal Your Digestion -Your body needs nutrients to work effectively.
    • The first step in PureBalance’s Health Restoration program is to reintroduce your body to real food.
    • A whole foods diet reintroduces your body to superior nutrition that nourishes every cell. But in order to take advantage of the nutrients your body needs for health, you must be able to digest them.
    • Research shows that over 62% of people suffer from some type of digestive illness and a higher percentage suffer from poor digestive health. [1]

Symptoms of poor digestive health can include:

  • Heartburn and GERD
  • IBS
  • Abdominal pain
  • Addiction
  • Adrenal fatigue
  • Arthritis
  • Autism and ADD
  • Auto-immune diseases
  • Bad breath
  • Candida
  • Celiac disease
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Chron’s disease and colitis
  • Constipation
  • Cravings
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Eating disorders
  • Hepatitis
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • MS
  • Migraines
  • Mood problems
  • Poor immunity
  • Thyroid problems
  • Ulcers
  • Weight gain and obesity

  • Reduce Inflammation – Most experts agree that inflammation is at the root of all disease. Evidence already shows that heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, early aging and arthritis are linked to chronic inflammation. [2] Every symptom you are experiencing has inflammation at its root.
  • Hormone Balance – Since hormones play a role in almost every function of your body, an imbalance in your hormones can cause a wide range of symptoms. Hormone balance is critical if you want to feel good, look good and have great energy.

Bottom Line: If you want to feel your best, stay healthy and look young, you must heal heal your digestion, reduce inflammation and balance your hormones.

Mind, Body, Spirit

Scientific Evidence: The Mind, Body, Spirit Connection & Your Health

Scientific Evidence of the Mind, Body, Spirit Connection & Your Health:

Research over the last several decades demonstrates the fact that you cannot separate the mind, body and spirit in health and healing.

The truth is your body was designed to be healthy. True health means that you are healthy physically, emotionally, and spiritually. When all 3 parts are equal and balanced you not only feel good but your life is happier and more complete!

Most healing programs work at the level of the body, forgetting the importance of your mind and spirit. This is why you may find yourself searching out multiple practitioners to support your journey to well-being.

At PureBalance Natural Health, our PureBalance Method (PBM) takes into account your whole healing process – mind, body and spirit.

Our natural health center services provide the full range of holistic health services, but don’t worry if you can’t come to see us at our health center.  Our site is designed to support you on your healing path. You will find questionnaires and articles to guide you to the appropriate lifestyle modifications, botanical remedies, and nutritional products that support your best health.

Science and The Mind-Body-Spirit Connection to Health:

Studies in the field of psychoneuroimmunology are demonstrating the effects of the mind and spirit in healing the body.

Placebo effect – In clinical trials, people who got the “sugar pill” or fake drug got better just because they believed they would. [1]

Attitude and cancer – Dr. H. Steven Greer conducted several studies, including a study with a 15-year follow up on women with breast cancer, and found evidence that attitude is linked to duration and survival of cancer. [2,3]

Your beliefs affect your health, including your genes – Dr. Bruce Lipton, internationally recognized biologist and article of The Biology of Belief , is a leader in teaching about the science of epigenetics. His scientific experiments prove that your perception or beliefs, affect your health. His studies show that even if you have a gene for a certain disease, it is your beliefs that can turn that genetic issue off or on. To learn more, read The Biology of Belief.

The PureBalance Method For Health & Healing

Your body is a self healing organism that is not programmed to be sick. Your body was designed to be healthy. Sometimes the absence of disease is mistakenly referred to as being healthy.

Why is it that so many people suffer from fatigue, depression and/or anxiety? What about all the people who complain of feeling bloated, gassy, constipated, or just plain sick? Too many people are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. What do you do when you don’t have a disease, but YOU know you don’t feel well?

Natural Health or Conventional Medicine?

Many people who feel this way struggle with either taking prescription or over the counter medications or taking the natural health route. If you have come to this site you likely value holistic health. You may have experienced the profound power of the human body when it comes to health and healing, heard from a friend about the virtues of natural medicine, or you just might be sick of nothing working to this point. Whatever your reason for being here we are happy to have you! So what is the first step?

Is It Time to Detox?

These days, popular beliefs will suggest that you jump right into a detoxification program. In a way, it makes sense, right? Just remove the toxic burden from our body and everything will be better...but there's a right time and a wrong time to embark on a detox program.

When Detoxification is NOT the Answer

First of all, it's important to assess your current state of health before jumping into a detoxification program. While we applaud the more natural detox programs that are popping up today, the vast majority of them are "one size fits all". In reality these programs are designed for and most effective for people who are already pretty healthy. If you are experiencing illness, fatigue or unwanted symptoms or if your organs aren’t strong enough, detoxing by itself could actually do more harm than good. In essence, you'd end up feeling worse and taking a step backwards in your quest for health.

PureBalance goes beyond other detoxification programs because we combine detoxification therapy with a system restoration program designed to restore your optimal health. In essence, we make sure your body is strong so that detoxification can happen in a healthy way. At the same time we make sure your body has the building blocks it needs to repair and rejuvenate. Most detox programs leave off this important second step.

PureBalance Health Restoration and Detoxification Program

The PureBalance Method (PBM) is a unique, powerful, yet gentle program designed to bring your body into balance, while supporting detoxification at the mind, body and spirit level.

Most other healing and detoxification programs forget that detox alone can often take the body out of balance, therefore depleting your energy and sometimes even doing more harm than good.

With decades of holistic health experience, Dr. Tom Bayne and Dr. Ingrid Maes created a health and healing program that supports you in feeling your best.

PureBalance Incorporates Two Simple, Yet Powerful Steps For Lasting Health:

1) System Restoration Program (SRP)

This is the missing link in most detoxification programs. As the organs of your body dump their stored toxins (detox) there is a primary need in the body to alkalize the system, hydrate the tissues, and control the inflammatory process. The steps in the health restoration portion of our program will do this by providing whole food nutritionals that support the digestive process and bring the systems of your body into balance.

2) Targeted Detoxification Therapy (TDT)

Many detoxification programs focus only on one organ, like the liver or large intestine. PureBalance has a unique detoxification program that goes beyond other programs because it helps you detoxify at the physical, emotional and spiritual level. This is the true definition of detoxification.
