turkey for the holidays

Does Turkey really make you sleepy?

The Turkey Coma – It isn’t Tryptophan!

The common belief is that the turkey you eat is loaded with tryptophan, which makes you sleepy after your Thanksgiving meal. While it is true that turkey contains tryptophan, an amino acid precursor for serotonin and melatonin, there is no more tryptophan in turkey than in chicken or beef.

Perhaps the fatigue is related more to the size of the meal consumed, rather than the content? The concept to consider is the important connection between the brain and the gut. In fact, at PureBalance, we believe that health begins in the gut, just as the father of medicine, Hippocrates stated.

There is strong evidence to suggest that microorganisms in the gut play an important role in bidirectional communication between the gut and the central nervous system. In fact, science now considers our gut our second brain.

The Second Brain

Have you ever felt uneasy? Had butterflies in your stomach? This is your second brain, responsible for controlling digestion. Your gastrointestinal tract is composed of 2 thin layers of nerve cells called the ENS or Enteric Nervous System. These cells communicate directly with the brain.

The ENS is comprised of more than 100 million nerve cells that communicate with your brain. Researchers have evidence that suggests that emotional shifts and mood swings may be the result of ENS signals.

With millions of nerves and neurons running between your gut and brain, gut health is intricately tied to brain and overall body health. Since the neurotransmitters and other chemicals produced in your gut affect your brain, scientists believe strongly that by altering the types of bacteria in your gut, it may be possible to improve your brain health, and ultimately, your overall body health.

At PureBalance, we have first hand success with helping stressed and unhealthy bodies by focusing on gut health. Don’t feel tired and bloated this Thanksgiving. Eat a healthy portion, take an after-dinner walk, and try our featured product, MegaSporeBiotic. The bacteria in MegaSporeBiotic will improve your digestion and encourage healthy communication between your gut and your brain!

All Disease Begins in the Gut - Hippocrates

This year is my 22nd year in practice and in the words of Jerry Garcia…what a long strange trip its been.  As my knowledge has grown over the years, the types of patients that seek my care have changed.  With allopathic medicine continuing to focus on suppressing symptoms and handing out toxic chemicals with horrible side effects many people sought my help to find the causative factors of their conditions.  The people that have put their trust in me over the years to help them find solutions to their health problems humble me.

Today, approximately 90% of my patients suffer from either a primary digestive issues such as gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, leaky gut, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, candida infection, bacterial overgrowth, and acid reflux, or a secondary digestive issue which I’ll explain in the next paragraph.  The number one reason patients visit their doctor is for digestive complaints.  In addition to these patients I also started seeing more patients suffering from autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and hashimoto’s disease.  Many of these patients had horrible digestive symptoms in addition to their autoimmune diagnosis.  Looking for ways to positively influence their dysfunctional immune systems, I learned that upwards of 80% of the immune system resides in the digestive tract.  If I was going to be able to help these patients in any way I needed to find a way to help their digestion. I also saw first hand that patients with acne, eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis often had poor digestion as the source of their symptoms.  Then there were patients who presented with headaches, fatigue, and hormone imbalances and after a complete review of their condition I realized that, in some cases, their digestion was the source of their discomfort. These are examples of what I call secondary digestive issues…the main complaint is not a digestive issue but as soon as you start to dig around for the cause of their symptoms digestion quickly moves to the top of the list.  At some point I realized if I didn’t have an answer to effectively support digestion then maybe a career change was in order.

My search led me to probiotics.
On paper probiotics seemed to be my answer.  I went to the best conferences and listened to the brightest minds.  They taught me that reseeding the bowel with good bacteria was the solution I was looking for.  Supplementing my patients with billions of lactobacillus and bifidobacteria would correct the imbalance in the intestinal tract and solve all my patients primary and secondary digestive issues.  I jumped in with both feet.

It turned out to be a little bit different in practice than what all those smart guys said.
I would say overall my experience with probiotics was very much a mixed bag.  While I had some success using probiotics, it wasn’t uncommon for a supplement to work for a week or two, and then lose efficacy.  Even in patients who reported improvement if they missed a dose or tried to lower the dose the symptoms came right back.  So the results I saw were transient.  We weren’t making any lasting change we were just treating a symptom.  I saw infections that wouldn’t get better, no matter how many probiotics we threw at them. My frustration grew with every ineffective probiotic strain I tried.

New probiotic formulations came out every day, but none of them worked consistently.
Because of my experience formulating supplements, I had real questions and concerns about the quality and consistency of the probiotic supplements that were on the market. Some had one strain, while others had 15, but regardless, nothing gave me the results I was looking for.  Then the market shifted to “more is better”.  It seemed like overnight we went from recommending 5 billion to 20 billion to 50 billion to 100 billion.  I bought in that more must be better but clinically I just didn’t see the changes in patients.

I questioned how these bacteria would make it to the intestines alive.
In school I learned that the stomach is an incredible barrier to entry.  It doesn’t just let any bacteria pass into our intestines.  If it did then we would always be sick and most people would die from some type of infection.  I also learned that the bacteria that inhabit our intestines are anaerobic, which means they die if they touch oxygen.  If the probiotic company is telling me the bacteria is alive when it is in my hand before I swallow it then it can’t be anaerobic.  So even if these bacteria could magically get past the stomach acid how could it live in an oxygen free environment in the gut.  Plus, where did caveman get his probiotics?  He didn’t have a refrigerated section at Whole Foods to shop from.  Nowhere could he access these bacteria in his environment.  It didn’t make sense.  As more research came out it became clear that this reseeding theory was just not supported by science.

Then something interesting crossed my desk…
A few years ago an article on Bacillus spores was passed to me from a colleague. I was immediately fascinated. Bacillus spores provided an answer to all of my concerns.  First, they are safe. Bacillus spores were the first prescription probiotics in the 1950’s.

Bacillus spores easily survived the stomach.
Because Bacillus probiotics develop a hard shell (an endospore), they are highly resistant to UV and gamma radiation, high and low temperatures, and acidic conditions found in the stomach. Gut model studies proved they survived the acidic stomach to populate in the intestines.

Bacillus spores are a great value.
With Bacillus spores, I got great, consistent results with a wide variety of gastrointestinal issues. As I started to investigate more, I realized that these results came from the unique properties of Bacillus. These spores crowd out harmful bacteria in the gut, produce enzymes to help with food digestion, and fight bloating and cramping. They also produce RDA-equivalent quantities of B-vitamins, vitamin K2, and offer a significant source of carotenoids, important antioxidants that can reduce free radical production in the body.

MegaSporeBiotic was created to provide consistent, reliable effects.
MegaSporeBiotic, is the first pharmaceutical grade, 100% spore form probiotic and carotenoid antioxidant combination formula.  The results we have seen with primary and secondary digestive issues have been remarkable.  Additionally clinical research using Megaspore has given us better insights on how these strains bring us their health benefits.  In June we will be finishing the first ever-human leaky gut study.  Pilot study findings were quite remarkable.

Natural Solutions to Seasonal Allergies

Are you experiencing congested sinuses? Headaches? Watery eyes?  Uncontrollable sneezing? Allergy season is upon us, and millions of American’s are going to turn to Benadryl, Claritin and other harmful drugs in search of temporary relief.

Natural solutions for Seasonal allergies:

1. Neti Pot: Using a Neti Pot cleanses, refreshes, and protects the nasal passages to help  alleviate sinus and allergy problems. We recommend adding 2 drops of Oregano oil and/or special Neti pot salt to your Neti Pot.

2. Liver Cleanse: Congestion of the Liver is often associated with allergies...so why not cleanse your liver?  PureBalance has an easy to follow Liver cleanse program available to you...get started now!

3. Probiotics: Upwards of 80% of your immune system resides in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract! We highly recommend MegasporeBiotic to meet your probiotic needs. Research shows that the specific strains present in MegasporeBiotic modulates the immune response and improves the symptoms associated with allergies. MegaSporeBiotic is available at the PureBalance apothecary.

4. Vitamin D:  Do you know your Vitamin D levels? Exposure to allergens and irritants can trigger the immune system to produce chemicals called cytokines, which cause inflammatory allergy symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes. Research shows that healthy Vitamin D levels keep cytokines in control.  Low levels of vitamin D are not the cause of allergies, but controlling the symptoms of allergies is a lot easier when your D levels are in the healthy range.

We recommend Micellized Vitamin D3.  It is a highly absorbable form of Vitamin D that has been shown to be 4x more absorbable than standard Vitamin D supplements.  Micellized Vitamin D is available at the PureBalance apothecary.

Forget What You Know About Probiotics and Gut Health!

As I alerted you earlier this week, I’m writing to share some exciting information and clinical results about a product that I discovered and have been researching for the past two years. More importantly, this discovery has already yielded amazing results! Let me begin by telling you a couple of stories:

J.S. is a 53 year-old female with a history of transient irritable bowel attacks. The episodes usually lasted between two and three weeks, with the symptoms gradually subsiding over time. When J.S. came to see me, she had been experiencing acute abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea for three days. She was given Megaspore Biotic. Within two hours of the first dose, she said the symptoms subsided about 85-percent. Within 24-hours, the symptoms were completely resolved.

T.S is a 43 year-old man with a history of ulcerative colitis. The symptoms were acute, including extreme pain and disabling spasms throughout his intestinal tract, as well as bloody diarrhea. T.S. was prescribed Megaspore Biotic along with aloe vera juice. Within the first week, the stools returned to normal consistency and the bleeding stopped. He said the cramping symptoms decreased 50-percent. T.S. noticed an increase in cramping whenever he ate dairy products, and decided to stop eating them. With the removal of dairy foods and the continued supplementation of Megaspore Biotic, the symptoms T.S. was experiencing were completely resolved over a period of four weeks.

M.M. is a 17-month-old girl with chronic diaper rash. Her mother reported that the toddler’s first episode of diaper rash began six days after birth in reaction to antibiotic treatments. The child had not been free of a rash for more than two weeks her entire life, and also experienced severe bouts of diarrhea. M.M. was prescribed Megaspore Biotic. Within 10 days, the toddler’s rash was gone and her bowel movements were normal. We are happy to report that M.M. has now remained rash-free for five weeks. In addition, her mother reported that M.M. is gaining weight, sleeping better, and is generally happier than she has ever been.

Megaspore Biotic IS making a difference

Natural Medicine is my passion and I love witnessing the transformation of my patients’ health. The changes I’ve observed in the short period of time since the introduction of this new product have helped reaffirm my belief that the majority of chronic diseases begin in the digestive system.

Since opening my practice close to 20 years ago, the number one concern of the majority of my patients has been digestive issues. Many of them came to me with little hope after traditional medical protocols didn’t work. Consequently, I’ve focused or obsessed about digestive health for quite some time. To help my patients, I’ve recommended or created a number of products that have yielded mixed results. However, I finally know I have found the nutritional supplement that is qualitatively making a difference: Megaspore Biotic!

If you are receiving this email, chances are our paths crossed in some way. You or a member of your family are a patient of my Natural Medicine practice; you may be a professional colleague, or you may have elected to follow my newsletter after searching for alternative medical information and discovering the Pure Balance Health Center website online. Whatever the reason, I am grateful to have the opportunity to share with you the research and the data which demonstrates why the discovery of Megaspore Biotic has far reaching implications for both health and disease management.

If you or someone you know suffers from any form of digestive discomfort, food sensitivities, IBS, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, obesity, joint pain, or even asthma, then I implore you to read all of this information because it will dramatically impact your life. If you or someone you know has an immune system condition, such as eczema, allergies, auto-immune condition, or any imbalance or disease associated with a weakened immune system, this information is essential.

The most in-depth research ever conducted on probiotics

Before I tell you more about Megaspore Biotic, I have to share the research, which will provide the context for your understanding why this is a major breakthrough.

Five years ago, the National Institute of Health (NIH) began the Human Microbiome Project (HMP). Two hundred scientists from 83 of the world’s top universities contributed their expertise to research and better understand the bacteria living in and on our bodies, and the role it plays in health and disease. The findings, which were first published in 2012, were astonishing. Here is what we NOW know:

  • We are more bacteria than human – 10 trillion human cells vs. 100 trillion bacteria cells.
  • There are more than 1,000 different species of microorganisms in each individual’s digestive tract out of nearly 35,000 possible species.
  • Bacterial genes outnumber human genes 150-to-1 (25,000 human genes vs. 3.3 million microbial genes).
  • No two individuals have the exact same composition – not even twins.
  • Disease is associated with a disruption of the ecology of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract (Crohn’s disease, IBS, asthma and even obesity)

In an effort to understand the role of supplemental probiotics (beneficial bacteria that can enter and inhabit the gut) in health and disease, the researchers recognized the need to define the function of the probiotic. These criteria are the result of millions of dollars of research; the most in-depth probiotic research ever conducted:

  • In order to act as a probiotic, the bacteria must be a species that normally occurs in the individual’s digestive tract. It must have a position in the microbiota or it won’t be able to settle and colonize.
  • Probiotics offer benefits through their stimulatory effects on the immune system in the gut and by reaching a critical mass to produce beneficial compounds. To be of benefit, it must have higher numbers than what naturally exists in the gut to colonize and cause stimulation.
  • Supplemented probiotics, by evolution, should naturally occur in the environment (where they gain exposure to the host) and be stable both in the environment and the GI tract.

Results that can’t be denied

You may be surprised to learn that based on these criteria, every commercially available probiotic currently sold in drugstores, physicians’ offices, and local health food stores don’t fit the bill. Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp. are the dominant probiotic strains in commercially available probiotic supplements and commonly added to foods. While it’s true that these bacteria do occur naturally in the intestinal tract, there are a few additional facts that the research brought to light.

The populations of Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp. are first introduced to our systems via our mothers – through natural (vaginal) childbirth and breast-feeding. They are GI tract anaerobes, meaning they can’t sustain themselves in an oxygen-rich environment outside of the GI tract.

Secondly, these are some of the most predominant organisms in our digestive system with upwards of 20 trillion of these bugs in an average intestinal tract. In order for probiotics to have an immune-stimulating effect they need to be supplemented in concentrations higher than what naturally exists. The best of these commercially available products claim upwards of 100 billion organisms per dose, which isn’t even close to the 20 trillion already there. Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp., even at dosages of 100 billion, simply can’t offer healthy immune-stimulation from dose-to-dose. It’s like adding a single drop of dye to a swimming pool and hoping to change the color of the water in the entire pool.

During studies of the oral administration of Lactobacillus sp., HMP researchers found that there was absolutely no impact on the concentrations of these organisms in the GI tract. They concluded that close to 100 percent of the lactobacilli were destroyed by the stomach acid before they could even reach the lower GI tract.

The bottom line: Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp. cannot survive the harsh conditions of the stomach when supplemented orally and their numbers are influenced most by the birth process and the first year of life. After that, the numbers stay pretty constant throughout our lives. Consequently, Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp should not be classified as probiotics but rather be classified as normally occurring organisms that inhabit our gut (gut commensal organisms).

HMP turns Probiotic Industry Upside Down

It is very important to say at this time that Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp products have been somewhat beneficial. I have used them for years and my own experience has taught me that some patients benefited from the supplementation of these organisms. I believe that future research will show that these organisms, even when they are dead, will positively impact the pH of the intestinal tract, which can be very beneficial to someone with digestive symptoms.

At the same time, this information also explains the limited benefits experienced after oral supplementation of Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp, and why they don’t last long after supplementation stops. The transient effect associated with pH changes requires daily dosing with no long-term benefits once supplementation ceases, and the benefits offer relief for a very small number of conditions. Whatever the reason may be, the facts are the facts. Lactobacillus sp. and bifidobaceter sp supplements are not capable of consistently modulating immune function in the gut, and immune modulation is a key quality for a true probiotic organism. Remember: Nearly 80 percent of our immune function is in the GI tract. True probiotics play a major role in its form and function. Thus, if a probiotic can’t effectively enter, colonize and create the immune stimulation, by definition, it’s not a probiotic!

Based on the results of the Human Microbiome Project’s research of bacteria, the crashing noise that you now hear is the probiotic industry turned upside down. Thankfully, the research also found the real answer.

Introducing Spore Bacteria

The answer is Spores! Spore-form bacteria are robust organisms that can survive the harsh environment of the stomach 100 percent intact. Through the evolutionary process, nature designed them to be transferred from human-to-human via the environment and food. They have evolved to be very stable in the environment and also to colonize the GI tract very effectively. In fact, studies have shown that certain developments of the human immune system specifically require spores.

What do we know about spores?

  • They are found all over the environment (soil, vegetation, dust, rocks, aqua-environments, digestive systems of insects, marine life, mammals, etc.) which means as a probiotic they are evolutionarily supported – a true probiotic.
  • Spores remain dormant until they get to the intestinal tract and then they colonize the bowel.
  • They are universally found in the human microbiota. They are normal organisms of our digestive tract.
  • There is a LONG history of use in industries where efficacy is closely measured, for example the pharmaceutical and agriculture industries.
  • Human studies have proven spores to be extremely safe and efficient.

Spore bacteria that are not in spore state will be destroyed by the stomach acid just like any other bacteria. The key is cultivating the spores using technology that ensures that the bacteria are maintained in spore form until it gets past the stomach and into the small intestine.

Physicians Exclusive Licenses the Technology

As I mentioned in the beginning, I’ve been obsessed with helping my patients heal from digestive challenges that were painful, limiting or controlling their lives. When I first learned about the potential of spore bacteria I knew I had to take action. I so deeply believed in the results of the research that I acquired the exclusive rights to distribute this patented product in the United States. I formed a new company – Physician’s Exclusive, LLC – of which I am the President.

The mission of this email is to introduce you to MegaSpore Biotic, the first of its kind, all-spore, pharmaceutical grade probiotic with the patented carotenoid rich HU36 strain. Here’s what you need to know:

  • It was developed under the advisement of spore expert Dr. Simon Cutting, Ph.D., by a practitioner for exclusive distribution by medical practitioners.
  • It utilizes verified, branded and registered strains – the only way to ensure proper characterization. Guaranteed prescription-grade and licensed from Royal Holloway at London University.
  • It is the only nutritional supplement probiotic on the market that contains Bacillus Clausii – a strain tested for more than 50 years, and is the best-selling probiotic prescription product in the world.
  • It contains five bacillus spore probiotics– the value of each strain is substantiated by a history of use and published science.
  • All strains are produced in a GMP facility under drug manufacturing guidelines.
  • It is the single-most, powerful spore probiotic formulation, and it delivers more than four billion live probiotic cells daily – a dose that matches and exceeds all prescription products of the same strains.
  • It is blended with a pre-biotic to enhance GI tract colonization
  • Its 100 percent spore format guarantees maximum survivability and precise dosing
  • It is the most broad-spectrum probiotic. The clinically studied strains used in the formulation offer more than 35 indications for use in practice.
  • It is the FIRST probiotic formulation to deliver powerful, highly-bioavailable carotenoids via in-vivo production. Bacillus indicus is a patented, carotenoid rich strain.

Not only have we established and demonstrated that Megaspore Biotic delivers the true probiotic function, but there are also the added health benefits of these bacteria-manufacturing nutrients, such as B-Vitamins, Nattokinase, Vitamin K2, Quinols and Carotenoids. The spore formulation makes it possible for these nutrients to be produced at the site of absorption so they are considered the most bioavailable nutrients. In particular, the carotenoids in Megaspore Biotic have been extensively documented and identified as alpha carotene, beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, asaxanthin, lycopene and lutein. These are all, exceptionally beneficial antioxidants that have excellent free radical quenching activity.

Why Megaspore Biotic is superior to any other Probiotic

Let’s review the HMP project criteria for probiotics:

1. Must have a position in the microbiota

MegaSpore Biotic qualifies! All strains in MegaSpore Biotic are human derived and have a firm place in the microbiota.

2.  Must have sufficient numbers to colonize and cause stimulation for benefit.

MegaSpore Biotic  is dosed at a concentration that is 2000 times higher than the native population in the GI tract.

3.   Supplemented Probiotics, by evolution, should naturally occur in the environment (where they gain exposure to the host) and be stable both in the environment and the GI tract.

MegaSpore Biotic is nature’s very own probiotic. Spores use the environment as a vector for transfer from host to host and are uniquely adapted to be stable in the environment and in the GI tract. We are capturing the power of millions of years of evolution in every dose.

Five Healthy Tips to Help You Enjoy the Holiday Season

The holiday season is almost here! Beginning with Thanksgiving and continuing until New Year’s Day, there are 40 days and 40 nights of opportunities to eat, drink and be merry!

As you know, too much of a good thing can be detrimental -- sugar, alcohol and poor food choices can wreak havoc on the immune system. But you don’t have to crash and burn-out your health during the holidays. Instead, prepare to enjoy all of the fun and celebrations by following these five healthy lifestyle tips, which are both preventative and curative in the event you do overindulge:

1. Eat two servings of organic fruit and seven servings of organic vegetables every single day. The majority of fruit and vegetables are nutrient dense, high in fiber and low in calories. They also contain a number of essential vitamins and minerals that cannot be found in other types of foods.

Two servings of fruit and seven servings of vegetables will help the body maintain the alkaline pH it needs to fight pain, illness and fatigue. Sound like a lot of produce? You can easily achieve these goals by eating soups, salads or by drinking green drinks and smoothies.

2. Decipher and manage cravings. One of the biggest challenges during the holiday season is to manage food cravings. It helps if you know the real message your body is sending, as well as what steps you can take to bring your system back into balance. Here’s a short guide to some of the most common holiday season, food cravings:

Sweet: Can’t get enough of sugar? More than likely, you’re experiencing an imbalance in your blood sugar metabolism. Take PureBalance Chlorella; eat small protein snacks every 2-3 hours of your waking day; be sure to consume high-fiber foods, as well as complex carbohydrates to help stabilize and rebalance your system.

Chocolate: Yes, it’s truly yummy! But craving chocolate often signals that your body is deficient in magnesium. You don’t have to give up chocolate. But eating other foods high in magnesium, such as nuts, seeds, fish and leafy greens, will be beneficial and can help ease the cravings.

Cheese: Macaroni and cheese, scalloped potatoes with cheese, as well as lots of pizza (to go with all that football) will be in heavy rotation this holiday season. If you find yourself dreaming about deep dish pizza, you may have a fatty-acid deficiency. Supplement with PureBalance Total Omega 3+ or Fish Oil, and include wild salmon, raw walnuts and ground flaxseed in your diet.

Salt: Craving salty and crunchy foods like popcorn and tortilla chips often signal an imbalance in the body’s stress hormones. Give yourself a break and take a few deep breaths to reclaim your center before you pop that salty snack in your mouth. You may also need to support your body with extra B-vitamins. A whole food, green supplement, such as PureBalance Chlorella is contains the entire B-complex, which can help your body do a better job of coping with stress.

3. Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! But not with soda, energy drinks, coffee, tea or alcohol. Your body needs and craves water. Every day, do your best to drink 32 ounces (1 quart) of filtered water for every 50 pounds of body weight. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, your goal would be to drink 96 ounces (or three quarts). But if you weigh between 151 and 200 pounds, you should strive to drink four quarts. We’ve got the perfect gift -- 40-ounce, stainless steel water bottles – to help you or your loved one stay happily hydrated this holiday season.

4. Move your body – at least every other day for a minimum of 45 minutes. Turn on the radio, watch the news, or open a magazine and you’ll read or hear about a study touting the benefits of exercise. Brisk walking, bicycling, yoga, dancing (NIA or Zumba) contribute to keeping your joints flexible, lowering inflammation, stabilizing your mood, improving the quality of your health and successful aging. There’s no simpler prescription for optimal health and longevity!

5. Probiotics and Vitamin D3 are two of the best supplements for optimal immunity. The beneficial bacteria will help remove the unwanted sugars and refined carbohydrates from the intestinal tract while selectively protecting the intestines from the types of yeast and bacterial infections that foster colds, flu or food poisoning. Vitamin D3 is a major powerhouse, which maintains your body’s calcium balance; aids cell differentiation; boots your immunity, regulates blood pressure, and supports insulin secretion. Not sure about your Vitamin D3 levels? We offer a simple test at PureBalance Health Center that will help you determine your body’s needs. Call the office at 224-521-1212 for details.

In the event that you do party too much, Pure Balance Living Fiber and Florabalance have the added benefit of hangover relief when you drink responsibly! The B-vitamins in Living Fiber help keep the brain hydrated and the probiotic bacteria will consume the sugars before they speed the dehydration process. For best results take 2-3 capsules of Living Fiber and 1 capsule of Florabalance before going out. Upon return, take the same dosage again with at least 12 ounces of filtered water. Be sure to eat a healthy, high protein breakfast, such as eggs, the next morning!

These tips can help you maintain (or restore in the case of overindulgence) your health and keep your spirits bright this holiday season. Of course, your best option is to always think prevention and take immediate action at the first signs of symptoms. PureBalance Natural Family Health Center always has the tools you need to keep you and your family feeling vibrant and healthy throughout the year! Happy Holidays from all the members of the Bayne Family and all of the staff of the PureBalance Natural Family Health Center!

Holiday Hours: In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, we will be closed Thursday, November 22 and Friday, November 23, 2012.

Protect Your Skin From the Sun With 3 Easy Steps

With all this beautiful weather and summer upon us, many people are spending time outdoors enjoying the sun.

And let’s face it, after being cooped up for the winter, many of us may even be overdoing time in the sun!

While most experts are finally agreeing that sunshine has its health benefits, it’s still vitally important to practice a healthy balance of sun exposure and sun protection.

Healthy Sun Exposure Has Great Benefits

When it comes to health and healing, I recommend that everyone spend at least 10 minutes in the sun per day (without sunscreen) as the best way to keep your serum vitamin D at optimum levels for good health.

Why Healthy Sun Protection Is Critical Too

But what do you do when beautiful weather arrives and you want to be outside all day? How do you protect your skin from the sun?

This question comes up a lot because of the sunscreen controversy in natural health circles today. The thing is, most sunscreens on the market have toxic chemicals that are harmful to your health. And if you’ve been reading our newsletters and articles, we’re certain you really care about creating your best health.

Choosing a good sunscreen is just as important as choosing good, healthy, toxin free foods. After all, your skin eats everything you put on it!

In fact, toxic chemicals from sunscreen absorb straight into your skin and ruin your health by disrupting your hormonal systems and increasing the production of free radicals.

Let’s discuss skin protection for those times when you are in the sun for more than 40 minutes or there is a possibility of sunburn based on the intensity of the sunlight.

Top Sunscreen Ingredients to AVOID

Shopping for the best sunscreen can be confusing at best. Here’s are sunscreen ingredients to avoid:

  • Spray or Powdered Suntan Lotion with Micronized and Nano-Scale Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide –Micronized and nano-scale zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in sunscreen provide strong UVA protection and while these ingredients have not been found to penetrate healthy skin, powder and spray products are often inhaled. You can actually inhale these small particles and they can potentially damage your lungs. European companies are already phasing out the use of these products.
  • Oxybenzone - a widely utilized ingredient that rates poorly due to high absorption through skin, high rates of allergic reactions, and growing concerns about hormone disruption

Animal studies indicate oxybenzone has estrogenic effects. Numerous other studies have linked   oxybenzone to hormone disruption, cell damage, and cancer.

  • Fragrance -it is always best to avoid fragrances unless they are plant based. Unfortunately, a loophole in federal law doesn't require companies to declare any of the dozens of toxic chemicals that a single product's fragrance mixture could contain.
  • Parabens (Methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, Isoparaben, etc.) – a common preservative used in sunscreens. Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, and some studies show it plays a role in the development of breast cancer and urogenital abnormalities.
  • Octinoxate (Octyl Methoxycinnamate or OMC) – this common ingredient in sunscreens has estrogenic effects, causes disruption of thyroid hormone and brain signaling and reacts when exposed to sunlight.
  • Octisalate - a penetration enhancer that may increase the amount of other ingredients passing through the skin.
  • Avobenzone - an unstable ingredient that breaks down in to unknown chemicals in sunlight.
  • Octocrylene -produces free radicals in UV light, like sunlight.
  • Homosalate -a weak hormone disruptor that forms toxic metabolites.
  • Ensulizole (Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid) - known to produce free radicals in sunlight, causes DNA damage and may cause cancer.
  • Padimate O (Octyl Dimethyl PABA / PABA Ester) -a paba derivative, releases free radicals, damages DNA, has estrogenic activity and causes allergic reactions in some people.
  • Menthyl Anthranilate – produces free radicals and has been banned in Europe and Japan.

If your own health isn’t reason enough to avoid these ingredients, do it for the sake of our oceans. National Geographic presented a theory where they implicate toxic chemicals from sunscreen in the death of coral reefs around the world.

So How Do You Protect Your Skin From Too Much Sun?

There are healthier sunscreens and I am going to share my favorites with you. But first, it’s important to know that what you eat actually has more importance on your skin health than you think!

Eat For Sun Protection

Sun protection starts from the inside because what you eat can naturally protect your skin from the sun. Here are two great examples of how you can nourish yourself to better skin:

  • Antioxidants- a diet rich in antioxidants, like vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, lycopene and selenium has been shown to protect your skin from sun damage.

The reason for this is because antioxidants fight the free radicals from the sun’s UV light. These free radicals contribute to cell damage, aging and the risk of skin cancer. [1]

A study in 2007 showed that the antioxidants carotenoids and flavonoids can reduce skin sensitivity to the sun.[2]

If you want to get carotenoids, eat your carrots, kale, spinach, collard greens, sweet potatoes, papaya and tomatoes. Flavonoids can be found in foods like apples, pears, berries, black beans, cabbage and parsley.

  • Probiotics – live good bacteria, called probiotics, can contribute to skin health by enhancing your digestion (for example, you can eat antioxidants, but if you can’t digest them well, you won’t get their full benefits!) and reducing systemic inflammation.

A study published in 2010 found that a supplement containing probiotic and carotenoids reduced skin damage from UV light.[3]

Consuming probiotic foods, drinks and supplements http://store.pbhealthcenter.com/category_s/14.htm) can have many benefits for your overall health!

So is diet alone good enough for sun protection? Well, it helps, but I also recommend choosing an all-natural sunscreen for added protection.

Choose Healthy, Natural Sunscreens

Here are some of my favorite all-natural sunscreens:

  • Zinc Oxide - a physical sun blocker similar to oxybenzone, but without the toxic side effects.
  • Sun Defense Minerals by Emnence Organics - provides intense SPF 30 sun protection in the form of a make-up powder. The tinted powder is sweat-proof and water-resistant, hypoallergenic and anti-inflammatory. Plus it is naturally anti-bacterial and will not clog your pores. Eminence does a great job with sustainable packaging too for an extra bonus!
  • Tomato Suntan Lotion (SPF 22) by Organic Skincare - filters the sun's harmful rays with tomato and other natural ingredients like sesame oil, carrot, aloe and titanium dioxide. The handpicked, organically grown ingredients are rich with body beautifying and protecting antioxidants like lycopene, bioflavonoids, and carotenoids.
  • Antioxidant Sun Butter Level 18 Sunblock Cell Protection by ISun Organic Skincare - blends mango seed butter with zinc oxide and Phytoplankton Phytolyase enzymes into a butter that not only guards against sunburns, but also repairs damged skin.
  • SPF 30+ Sunscreen No Fragrance by California Baby – this sunscreen isn't just for babies! California Baby is safe for sensitive skin, free of artificial scents, and has no irritating chemicals while still providing UVA-UVB broad-spectrum protection. California Baby is also very conscious to use earth friendly packaging.

It All Comes Down to 3 Easy Steps

For a worry-free summer, follow these 3 easy steps:

  1. Keep your skin sunscreen free for a short period (about 10 minutes), so you can keep your vitamin D levels healthy.
  2. Consume a probiotic and antioxidant-rich diet for good digestive health and UV light protection.
  3. Use a chemical free natural sunscreen to protect yourself when in the sun for longer periods.

And most of all, enjoy your summer outside!
